Update: I don't have to work tonight, so if anyone wants to show up earlier, I'll be hanging around the Hood most of the night.
EDIT:
Here's what we do:
The mining ships shoot the rock, the trader's tractor it and head to New York. They'll sell the gold ore at Detroit munitions AND SEND ALL THE MONEY TO ME! Then, pick up Luxury Consumer goods at New York and take to Planet New London. Sell there and pick up Mining Machinery. Sell on the Hood, return to the mining site and pick up more gold.
All money will be divided evenly between everyone there. If you're not happy with this, don't bother showing up.
I guess I'll pop down with a mining ship. Be there in a few.
EDIT: Well, that went well.

Started mining at around 17:30 my time, took quite a while, and we found we were in the wrong field. Moved by Dusty and re-started around 18:00 my time.
Took us about an hour to fill the 5k transport half way, then the server crashed for 15 minutes, then we restarted, again took us another hour or so to fill up the transport.
The mining ships continued working, and I accompanied the first transport to New York, where we sold the ore, picked up some Lux Consumer Goods and returned to New London.
The next transport took a little longer to finish off, and we repeated it.
Total time taken: 2 hours, 15 minutes.
Total amount raised per person: 11 million credits. Not including me. This was between 10 people, 8 mining ships, 2 traders.
Total amount per person per hour: Around 4.5 million credits.
Now excuse me, but we were using the field Dusty showed us, we were shooting rocks like madmen and trading as fast as we could, and I could get more money singing in front of manhattan for pennies.
This is terrible if you ask me. The average yield of ore dropped was around 4 or 5, tops. In my opinion it should be closer to 20.
Mining needs to be re-looked at, and while I appreciate all your hard work Cannon and Dusty, the thing you made best for us (Niobium) sells best at a base we are not allowed to dock on (The Ring). Cheers.
Seriously, if you want people to use any method except trading you need to make this better. This was a total waste of time.
Mining profits were pitiful, 3 people mining gold nonstop for about 15 min, and all we got was 15 mil out of it. The profits do not stack up against trading in the least bit.
-You were using far too many mining ships, and not nearly enough transports. From our mining group's time in the tau's, I've found that the best profit comes when you use 1 mining ship (an actual mining ship, not a spatial or mafic) and 1 4-5k trade ship. A single miner can generally mine up 4k worth of ore by the time the trade ship goes to and from the selling point - so any more is really overkill. Further, the more people involved, the less money each person is going to make in the same amount of time. Now, if you had 8 mining ships and 8 transports, things probably would've been more profitable for everyone involved.
-Gold isnt one of the better-selling ores, in my experience mining with the new system. Generally speaking, if it doesnt trade well, it doesnt mine well. I rarely made more than a few million a run trading gold, and I only hauled gold when I needed to get to somewhere else for more profitable cargo. Diamonds, niobium, etc. are far more valuable commodities to mine for.
-Trade ships do not really need to be allied to the mining players, unless you're in an actual mining faction with a set tag and ID. With our mining op in the taus, we use junker trade ships, because they are less susceptible to pirates and neutral with the majority of faction npc's you're likely to encounter.
Note that most fields are balanced to need 2-3 mining ships to fill the hold of a trader. Some fields turn on the optimum profit at 5-6 ships but most are 2-3.
We did a retest of Dublin today. We filled a 5K transport in 20 minutes with two mining ships. This is the target rate. You (and pirates) can have significant amounts of RP if you do this right. Did I say RP? I meant money.
EDIT: two mining ships = one mafic + one miner
EDIT: at the old buy/sell price = 12500 x 5000k = 62,500,000 per trip in one direction.
