Still haven't gotten a reasonable explanation as to why the use is out of character for (for example) a teenage character?

I mean, they use emoticons IRL...so why would it be out of character for that?

Perfectly on topic to be fair. Us Homo sapiens dudes like to shorted everything except our lives and sexual organs. Two dots and a bracket seem replace a smile and saves us the amazing amount of 30 milliseconds. A "lol" here and there indicates a feeling which is not worthy of a real smile but simply cannot go unnoticed. Who knows maybe Shakspere would have wrote Hamlet's monologue in full leet if he wasn't an illiterate noob.
