Nicer graphics can increase immersion which can increase gameplay value.
Stop being so haughty.
I don't know about others, but I know I'm not being elitist. That has nothing to do with the discussion.
1). We cannot just take from Crossfire/Shattered Worlds or other mods, the work that other developers have done. There have been criticisms levelled at Disco for "killing" other mods. If we take the hard work THEY have done to upgrade OUR mod, then we validate those claims. It is better to do the work ourselves, IF the developers so choose to go that way into graphics.
2). Gameplay will win over graphics everytime in the long run. There does come a point where graphics needs to be improved, however it's usually not a good idea to improve it all at once. Also do remember that comparisions make for great discontent. Disco is not X3, is not Shattered Worlds, is not Halo. If you are so interested in playing a sparkly game go play one.
3). You need to remember that developers are volunteers, they don't get paid. NOBODY in this Dev team gets paid to upgrade Disco. To put this kind of pressure and comments
Quote:You gameplay > graphics ELITISTS need to get over yourselves.
on them is completely unfair. They put a heap of work into the Disco already.
4). Again I repeat, if you want good graphics so badly, then upgrade your skills, and join the developing team, with your focus on graphics. The entire Disco community might appreciate it. Different developers have different focuses, and each person can contribute in their own way. Jinx has amazing arguments for and against things and brings to light many problems that can then be worked out. Frozen is a hitbox king. Treewyrm is working on nomads, but along the way has found concave and convex problems that have since been solved. Igiss spots coding bugs and other things. Silent works on graphics. Seth works on sounds and other things.
If you want better graphics, then YOU focus on graphics and join the development of Disco. It's that simple.

I never said I want Disco to turn into an eye-candy demo I was more or less replying to posters like Dancing Lady who essentially shot the idea down without a second thought... because "gameplay > graphics".
Ya, I AGREE that gameplay is most important. But like I said, if someone wants to put in the work so that those of us with better systems have a CHOICE to run the game so it looks nicer, who are you to shoot that down? And I NEVER said that had to involve ripping off other mods.

No need to get so defensive or aggro about it.:)
Who am I to shoot down an idea that has been and gone around the block many times? I dunno. Who are you to demand that we do anything?
If that graphics work is done, then people dont HAVE a choice to turn it down or up. So your CAPSLOCK usage was wasted there.

1. You took everything I said out of context. I'm allowed to be a little defensive about it.
2. I never demanded anything.
3. Who cares how many times it comes up? Someone can still choose to do the work if they want and submit it to the devs for consideration.
4. A lot of effects that would be detrimental to framerates on older systems would likely be similar to the ENBSeries mod, and as we all know, we absolutely DO have a choice in that regard. Updates like more vibrant star backgrounds would however probably have little effect depending on texture sizes. You act like this is a big hit against old machines, but what about updating bases to match the style of their respective Houses? That could cause a performance hit to players/the server but wouldn't necessarily increase gameplay significantly either. But I don't see anyone telling people in that thread its a complete waste.
5. You called me out on capslock usage for capping 2 words for emphasis? Are you a complete tool? NEXT TIME I USE FOR FULL SENTEANCE OK TAHT WEY UR BURN WILL ACTLULY B APPLUCKABL. If you have a problem with my posting style why don't you take it to PMs?
Quit trolling.

For one throwing around the word elitist so lightly you fail to realise that by upgrading graphics many people would be left being unable to play Discovery. Of course, doing this is in no way elitist in itself is it?

Most of the changes that I believe are being discussed would not be particularly detrimental to performance. I tried Shattered Worlds out for kicks, and for the most part its just nicer star backgrounds and some new planet textures plus ENBSeries mod effects. There are a few others like improved particle effects on gates/lanes and a nice new docking ring model. As small as most of the changes are though, they do have a noticeable impact on the aesthetics of the game.
I'm not talking about adding DX10 shaders, bump mapping, soft shadows and double poly counts. If someone wants to slap together some nicer backgrounds what is the big deal with doing that?
AGAIN, my only reason for using the term "elitist" was because a number of people were simply shooting down the idea with no deeper argument than "gameplay > graphics". If thats the case, why bother giving us the option to activate ENB, discuss faction stations, or even offer new ships? Why can't we just reuse all the vanilla ships. We don't need an Outcast Bomber, we can just use the Sabre model but give it dif stats. Don't want the mod size to get too big. Some of the people posting in this thread are doing nothing but stifling creativity for the sake of it.
I'm not talking about a major graphics overhaul that is going to seriously impact performance. I never even said I thought it should/had to happen. I just think its absurd to simply shoot down someone's idea without a second thought because its not "your way". Hell, I'm sure it'd be possible to release a high-res texture pack that could be an optional update for people who wanted to run it. Even star backgrounds and whatnot could be included. It doesn't have to be a FORCED upgrade.
I realize I may have been a little harsh with my initial post in this thread. But give me a break. "My god, stop making such a fuss about graphics! As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't improve gameplay!" is not constructive. No one was even making a fuss. Starscapes and particle colors were brought up and those are simple, easy, low system stress ways of increasing the ambiance/aesthetics of the mod.

Nothing is "wrong" with that. This topic has come up time and time again. But the people who complain about "omgthe graphcissuxxors" don't actually DO anything about it (with a few exceptions.)
All I said was that if you want the graphics so badly, become a developer and join in.
Some of the Developers replied in this thread and SAID "Be patient. It's coming and it takes time" But you seem to have missed all the GOOD replies inamongst your desire to put those ELITIST etc. right.
Also you make sweeping general claims without context. "and as we all know, we absolutely DO have a choice in that regard." Not as far as I know which is where my comments come from. THEN YOU accuse ME of trolling.
Pointless long winded arguments about nothing that REALLY doesnt matter.

Since i had nothing better to do, i decided to dig out a few screen shots of the visual enhancements already added to Discovery. This is a very small portion. There's engines aswell but my photobucket is too big to search them all out and i dont want to boar anyone rofl.
And to make things nicer, just screw around with the ENB series settings if you like. The ini included was just a nice ballance, im sure it could look better. Here's what mine looks like these days. Never mind the planet its a work in progress.
