Yes, travel will take a while, if you dont use the jump drive system (To explain, again, cruise engines will have a speed of around 30,000m/s, but will only remain active for about one second and have a 20-30 second charge-up time, so players can do quick 'bursts' of travel to move long distances in each sector).
There are no jumpholes, tradelanes, or jump gates. Travel between sectors is accomplished through navigation bouys on the edges of each sector which the player can 'dock' with - at which point the player goes through a transition sequence to move to the next sector. We'll most likely modify the jumphole transition sequence to look more like the ship is just travelling through space.
There is only one 'jumphole' in the mod, and that's the rift - a small black hole on the edge of the system which can be docked with to reach the abyss (raider space).
Here's an updated map of the system, which we're now calling Caldera:
That is fantastic. Could I suggest that the planets be much smaller though? In our solar system Jupiter would be as large as one of the moons near the left most blue planet I believe - just to put things into perspective... Regardless though I can't wait!
Edit: Actually more like one of the astroids in the belt.
Edit2: I can see myself getting shot down for saying this, but it would be excellent if we could agree on a couple of days of downtime on disco to get everyone to give Exodus a try when it comes out? Hmmm maybe I just made myself into a moving target for flamers...
No, the planets wont be made smaller. Reason? Because that map (well, a higher quality rendered version of it made with 3ds max) will be replacing the "sirius galaxy map" in-game. Players should be able to see the planets with relative clarity.
Here's the map with names/keys/etc:
Red boxes around the planets/areas indicate 'sectors' in the game (which will be the equivalent of freelancer 'systems'). Red lines connecting those boxes are travel paths between sectors.
Four out of five factions (and the system name itself) begin with a 'c'.
Your jump drive idea seems pretty neat, though. Easy to do even without FLHook, just set the cruise engine power draw appropriately and they'll drop out of cruise by themselves.
How are you going to implement "docking" with planets? Are you going to have "planetside"/in-atmosphere flight like FL was originally supposed to have?

There will be no habitable planets, as far as I know. Stations are the main places for population throughout the Caldera systems.
I might, if I have the time, model a small moon with a pressurized base on its surface. Could be fun.
I wish it was ready now, because I have fallen in love with the idea. It just seems so right, and all of the changes being made (the cruise jump, the ballistic weapons, and others) are just what I want.
I'm bookmarking this thread, because I want to know as soon as it's out. Just one question: have there been any ideas as to what will be in the neural section of Caldera?
[17:45:39] Wolfs Ghost (Murphy): Tom, you have problems. Go kill yourself.
[19:25:12] Johnny (Jam): Tomtom, I will beat you with a spoon.
[14:22:56] Prarabdh Thakur: KILL HIM WITH A SHEEP.
[17:40:48] Eagle (Junes): Tom should be slapped with a spoon.
[11:32:18] Warspite: Thank you for being so awesome Tom. <3
[18:17:36] Metano: I love you tomtom
[20:06:24] Warspite: I will seriously give you epic head.
