Hydrogen fuel naturally contains a low concentration of positive hydrogen ions which cause acidity. Over a long enough period, there is no defence against the corrosion of the fuel tanks.
MOX based fuel tends to decay, and the products inevitably over time react to form exotic particles which can also destroy fuel tanks.
To put it plainly, if you try to take a voyage to a neighbouring system without the proper containment equipment, your ship WILL explode.

A few weeks ago I did the same thing in New York. Along with an experiment on how far my Mining Ship could drift before coming to a stop from a cruise-speed engine kill. Never did let myself come to a complete stop, though.
Probably the best part of the trip was inviting a hostile to come after me. Never took me up on the offer, but still...
