Yeah the shields would need to go down, but that would mean the cap ship is open to hull damage.
I just had an idea, how about being able to "train" npc characters on your capship and deploy them as needed? Like, the more you train npcs, the better they get at combat along with better fighters/bombers and weapons.
Killed a total of 3 peeps plus a level 5 starflier crashing into me 3 times on purpose xD

hehe a fun idea... but i think that's taking it a bit too far
The NPC training is impossible. NPC wingmen and player docking are possible, but bugger and rather difficult to implement. I see no reason really why Discovery would even need these.
well the losing of the shields was more for RP than anything else. ships cant pass through shields in Freelancer. So how would the fighters launch when you have your shields up?

What if you created one kind of 'carrier' class, like the Liberty carrier.
This ship would have maybe half the guns of a battleship, more armor, no shields, but capable of launching fighters.
I can see these be used a lot. and would love to see it.
