How about some configurable auto-text when people get in range of the base; like the docking message.

"Intruder X, you are hostile to base owners Z. Prepare to die" etc. etc.?

The premise that hostile bases direct positive activity from in-game to the forum is pretty shaky when people don't even know what hit them.

The bases themselfs open up a massive amount of potential for Roleplay. Its then down to the players to use it.

So far the only base sieges I've been on where I haven't seen people act OORP'ly or break server rules are the ones where a defencive force never showed up. I myself have always respected the rules regardless of whether I'm attacking or defending. I have died in sieges / defences before and I've always logged out after, and on one occasion even gone and done something else for the 4 hours before coming back.

I guess the thing is Bases take a lot of investment, usually more from the defending side than the attacking side but its still a large time investment. Because of the amount of time people have to invest into it they're willing to break a few rules if it means they can make thier investment worth while. I've been chased off a base I was attacking in the past, theres very little in this game thats more frustrateing than dedicateing 8 hours to a siege, starting to do damage, and then having to flee. But it seems some people lack the self control to not break the rules out of frustration.

^That's the crux of the problem, player bases are player objects more than anything else. The hours of time invested are player hours, that's why the players get extremely attached to them and grow one-eyed justifications for all sorts of actions.

If some fancy rules-set or extra code can't help alleviate the problem, then just make them easier to build and maintain and easier to destroy. Players get less attached then.

They would be free game, or at least free game for anyone that would normally be able to kill stuff wherever they are.
That would be the price for not showing who owns the place.

This. If they show no affiliation, make them open targets. If the base owner wants it to keep existing, then they'd have to RP. because what faction would accept a mystery base on their space-turf?

Arent every base is listed on forums in server's status area? There you might find basic information about base.

Oh, and I also agree, that base itself indeed opens huge RP opportunities. Rest is up to ppl who flying around.

It's not that straight forward though. We built our base before to try and encourage other players to come using it, that was the main purpose to get other people involved making it worth while running. But to be honest nobody else did show much interest in it. Bases tend to get looked at, if you don't own it - your not interested in it. Then it becomes as you say, mainly a base owners (only) toy, with not much RP taking place. But that doesn't mean the base doesn't offer RP, such as trading to it, or selling and buying codes from one.

A base having an affiliation doesn't make much difference, ours was given one and when I asked a few freelancer players to help defend the base when under attack present in the same system "the base was freelancer affiliation", the reply I got back was the base had nothing to do with them, they wasn't intersted. That says it all really when it comes to player bases and RP, don't expect help, not even if your base carries an affiliation same as other players their.

Unless you have many friends on the server willing to come to your aid, ie: Skype buddies. Then forget it, you''re on your own defending it.

I was wondering when do the thread like this will appear since the last time I, myself, was talking about bases being useless addition to Freelancer's gameplay and serve no purpose then to ruin the gameplay even more like it wasn't RIP already.

I'd say "GG", but seems it's not yet time to see people agreeing on what was said months and years before. SLOOOOW.

That's a good point actually, we both know many won't spend 8 hours trying to kill a base, then when they get chased or killed in system leave it for 4 hours for the base owner to re-top up fuel for shield. They will break server rules by re-logging to another char to contiinue doing it, because they already wasted 8 hours of their time doing so.

Seen it happen myself with our base when getting killed. Amazing how these new players suddenly pop-up and come killing a base when one was killed 5 minutes previous doing it and has to leave system. LOL

I said it from day 1. Bases have no RP when it comes to attacking, or defending them.
Only way this will change is if the admins do something to change it. Like a new rule or 2. Or do something with bases, but i got no idea's here that would not cause flame war.

Theres a mod where bases are destroyable, destroying a base is a part of the RP, if you cant get rid of it, be friendly with it. For instance, the toasters built a new base near gammu, Im wondering how long that will last, not that the Order would care.. ugh.. perhaps they would.

Were fools to make war on our brothers in arms.
