I would ask what would be a reasonable demand if the trader refuses stopping and listening you?
And what's about your question, I don't think any pirates demand much than the cargo is worth. And neither think that anyone would demand you dropping 200% of cargo.
Now another case, if you'd encountered the pirate and managed to escape from him, expect more than the reasonable demand from him if he catches you next time. That's quite logical and inRP.
Otherwise I don't really think any pirates would do an "unreasonable" demand, unless he/she is a newbie.

I have one simple proposal. Currently the possibility for a trader to pay depends on the cargo, their ship, the time wasted to get to the point they are now and such. Right now we buy cargo for 500 and sell for 4k. How about we buy for 5000 and sell for 44 000?
That will make the trader think twice before flying alone and essentially, the profit is the same as it is now. Just more risk involved.
You wanted to say 5000 and 8500 didn't you?
I came to the very same conclusion long time ago.
Increase the worth of cargo, keep profits the same (or almost the same), and piracy and trading get way more interesting.
Upon reflection, if I was to abuse such a change, I would sit there in my Pirate IDed ship and ask people to drop and shoot their cargo.

Trading is boring, more risk, and more profit needs to be involved.
Yesterday someone blew up my 5K full of gold ore 20k from the sell point (worth 50 million), I wasn't even bothered, if it had been 100 million, I might have been a little annoyed, just a little.
Since I mostly play pirate chars 90% of the time, I don't really care when I get pirated and lose money when I trade/mine the other 10% of the time (to buy more pirate ships lol).
Maybe the moaning traders should spend some of their money on a cheap bomber and give it a try, it's fun, and you make a little cash on the side too, don't feel bad! It's just a computer game with virtual internet moneys!
