So he was chasing you in cruise, got close enough to shoot, then shut down cruise so he could shoot you? Maybe I'm missing something, but that doesn't sound illegal to me.

Anybody else's input?... Please?
Ohhhh, you're talking about attacking you in the first place, not the actual chasing and shooting part? Yeah, that's because you were Order tagged. Liberty is hostile with the Order, so if you go flying around, they WILL kill you. Only exception is New York, which is no-PvP and no-RP.

I... think that makes sense... probably. Okay, thanks, Drake.
But I was talking about the cruise-drift-shooting. But at least now I know how seriously the RPers take the Order.:(:)
Engine kill at cruise to fire on another ship that is also in cruise = legal
Engine kill at thrust to fire on another ship = legal
Engine kill at cruise to fire on another ship not in cruise = bad:nono:
As far as I know that's the engine kill rule in pretty much black and white. I'll leave the reasons for that rule to the admins to describe.
So what's so special about engine kill? I don't think I've ever used it (have no idea what key it is), I just hit Esc to drop out of cruise, or spin my mousewheel to reduce my speed otherwise.

Wait, so if I'm running from somebody at cruise speeds, but then I decide I may as well fight 'cause I probably won't escape, I can't kill engine and flip around and shoot the persuer?
If you are running away, wouldn't that count as a re-engagement ? That might be construed as shield
running ... Be careful with where you are going with this everyone ...
And Magoo, why are you surprised people take roleplay seriously here ? This is a roleplay server, the
title tends to give it away just a little. Best check where you should and shouldn't be docking according
to your chosen faction story ... Might find yourself very unpopular otherwise.

You know what, the more I read the descriptions of the rules the more it seems like all battle rules are slanted in favour of the aggressor, and of a pretty dry concrete type of battle.
You can either stand and fight or just run, nothing in between. No tactics at all. So without tactics then in a fight with two people of equal-vanilla-straight-up dogfighting prowess the one with the better weaps will win.
I'm fleeing, I can turn faster cause I'm not fully decelerated, therefore its against the rules cause... well its an advantage not directly related to how good my guns are.
I can't cruise out of a fight cause... well cause my ship has the ability to go faster while killing my weapons and I have to not thrust for 5 seconds... its against the rules cause... cause... I don't really know why.
Basically this favours big guns, big shields, and basically anyone that has dogfighting down.
So in all of these strict rules I see no room for clever tactics that allow someone who isn't as well armed, equipped, numbered, or experienced to get an advantage over someone who has been codie hunting and has a clan that allows him to PvP regularly.
What I'm saying is that all these rules are saying "people aren't allowed to do this stuff cause it creates an advantage over someone that just wants to shoot someone inside of 700 meters until their energy drains."
Point Number Two
The other thing I want to emphasize is that all this focuses on the location of the ships in relation to each other. So what are they fighting over? I thought that battle was about fighting for control of an area. Pirates control trade zones, factions tax their territory, police scan cargo in their space. This isn't about the individual PvP but about the value of the territory in which it occurs.
So why do people chase and chase and chase? They've won control of the contested area. They want the kill is what.
All this confusion over basic rules makes me nervous to even engage someone in combat since I'm newish and don't want another iffy sanction on my butt.
