I've only been back for a short time, but I'd like to throw in my 2 cents nonetheless.
Disco won't die until the day it's dead.
Until that day. There is an over-riding truth that needs to be accepted: the glory days are over & will never, EVER return.
Time is what defines reality & like it or not, time has passed this game by...it's just the nature of the beast.
What we have instead now is a renewed opportunity.
I've been around since shortly prior to the old-school population explosion & I stayed around 'till long after it, & I can say, in my personal experience: Now is a great time to play.
In a nutshell, I've learned beyond a shadow of doubt, that the lower the server count, the more human the players.
The heyday of 200+ on server is not something to truly lament.
Now is all we have & in my view what we have is a good thing:
...an opportunity to appreciate those few that choose to join us, & those fewer still that decide to keep playing in our community despite all our flaws.
Anyone that joins us nowadays is potentially so much more than just a number. they could become gold if we can do what it takes to keep them.
One of the biggest reasons imo, is the fact that its hard for new players to get the game. Its not on Steam, GOG, or even the Microsoft store.
I guarantuee if it was for sale on either Steam or GOG, 200 player mark wouldn't be that hard to achieve.
Not even talking about a HD remake like Age Of Empires or Rise Of Nations, just put it on there in its current 2003 Vanilla state and it would sell like hotcakes.
Take a look at the 22,500 votes on the GOG wishlist page for Freelancer, and maybe vote on the page too while you're there : https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/freelancer
Thats only on GOG, and only the people who bothered to vote. I assure you, there is enough people that want to play this game.
If only MS would bother to put it up for digital purchase/download.

This is a mod for an old game, MS is not going to put freelancer on Steam as old as it is, and this mod is not something they can sell or post on steam.

I wish I was around in the glory days. I knew about the FL and the mod, but didn't get the mod. But anyways, these days have good parts too. And for me, I feel the best is yet to come.

This is the hard truth
The community wrong management attracted every ill-behaved player specially those who can turn any live gaming community to dead one very fast.
The problem is not in the mod as much as it is actually the wrong management. I agree with the above quote and i think that realizing the problem is the first step for fixing it.
I was passing by, decided to give a look at the discovery forums after almost 1 and half month of staying off it. I wish you good luck here.

Mods are never included in games, you always have to get them from other sources like the Nexus, moddb, steam workshop or the website/forum from the mod creators.
They re-released Age Of Empires 2 , even made a HD remake of the game, and this game is from 1999.
Rise Of Nations came out the same year as Freelancer, and that game has gotten a remake too... Updated graphics, steamworks and twitch integration.
Why would it be impossible for freelancer to be put up on Steam or GOG in its current state?
Microsoft abandoned the FL servers a while ago (I forgot when, I wasn't playing Multi then). I feel like they wouldn't do it. But maybe some small party may be able to get it onto Steam. If you got the 22,000 or so people to petition, maybe it would work. It would definitely raise awareness if it made it to the Steam Store.

Good question.
Who owns rights to Freelancer right now? Maybe we could make some sort of petition to attract their attention. Steam seems to be a more or less adequate source of profit, so they might be willing to soak out some money from this game if there is some interest. Some people can buy it for the sake of having it as a remainder of good ol' days, some will get that feeling of nostalgia and replay the campaign, some will be interested in retro...
Some will look for mods.
We could also make a little page in the game's community center that advertises the mod.
The question is whether we can make those people care.
P.S.: Damn, I got ninja'd hard. Like, dunk-level hard. Also Microsoft it is, then.
If they charged like $5 (Sorry, I be American. But whichever currencies equal this value) per game, they'd make a lot of money. Especially if you charge for the mod, too. You'd make quite a bit of money. Hypothetically, if 22,000 people bought the thing for $5, you'd be making $110,000 (Excuse my American Currency XD)
