There has been a lot of discussion of the rules lately, and especially about the many new players who either dont know them or refuse to abide by them.
I have largely kept out of those discussions for several reasons, most of which I have no interest in sharing here.
I have only one point to make about all of this.
Man was not made for the rules; the rules were made for man.
The rules are not the end; the rules are the means to the end.
Many of you have forgotten that, and your pharisaical legalism is doing far more harm than good.
The fact is that Discovery is populated by people, and as such it will contain all of the annoyances, vices, psychological/emotional/personality diseases that people possess in real life. If you want a haven from the interpersonal disturbances found in real life, then you have come to the wrong place. The only location you will find such a thing is an empty room; but it will cease to be that place the very moment that YOU enter it. If by some delusional chance you thought Discovery was an escape from interpersonal conflicts of all kinds, its time to wake up from the delusion and get a firm grip on reality.
In the real world, people can be selfish, conniving, punks. Discovery has its share.
In the real world, people can be whiny brats. Discovery has its share.
In the real world, people can be tyrannical, despotic blowhards. Discovery has its share. (I met one on Discovery last night actually.)
In the real world, people can be flagrant posers, sinners, and degenerates. Discovery has its share.
In the real world, people can be kind, merciful, generous, and playful. Discovery has its share.
Need I go on?
To put it as simply as I can, some of you just need to grow up.
I know that is asking a lot of some of you, because many of you guys are just kids, and maturity is a process earned through experience. In the meantime, you can at the very least be respectful, and maturity will arrive in due course. Due to the relative anonymity of the setting here, it is very easy for some of you teenagers to pretend that you are adults and are on the same level as those of us who definitely are NOT kids any more. I am willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, until they prove they are not worthy of itbut kids, you need to remember that some of us possess the advantages that age brings, and while you may doubt their value nowwe who are the real adults know that you are just pretending. So please, play with us, but watch out who you act like a tough guy towards. A battleship may make you feel tough in space, but believe me, you are the only one who believes it; the rest of us arent fooled. If you want real respect and the comradeship that comes with it, dont just bring the biggest guns into the system. Bring the biggest imagination used in a positive way.
And finally, no more griping, complaining, whining and discussing all the lousy instances of rule-breaking.
To warp a phrase: one pilots load of garbage is another pilots role-play.
We can disagree to the end of time about proper role-play for pirates, traders, police, military and terrorists. But why bother disagreeing about it when we can be PLAYING!
Sure, I dont like the role-play that some of you bring to Discovery. In fact, there are 2 entire clans that I think just downright suckand not because they arent good at what they do (because they excel at it from what I can tell) but because I just dont personally like it, and in one case find it downright offensive. But you havent heard about it from me, and you wont, beyond that.
Chances are, you feel that way about somebodys clan or character too.
So here is my advice: just dont play with them.
Discovery is a really big place, and you can play with whomever you want and refuse to play with whomever you want.
If you really object to somebodys role-play, THEN JUST DONT PLAY WITH THEM, simple as that. If they insist on trying to play with you, it takes two to tangoand I think you should be able to figure that out from there. The fact is, that they have just as much right to play their character as they choose, as you do to disapprove of them. But for Eriss sake, STOP complaining about it!
As Sir Paul might have sung it, Live and let live; or if they insist, Live and let die.
Now, STOP READING AND WRITING THESE POSTS ABOUT THE RULES AND COME PLAY WITH ME!

Well-put, Xoria. Well done. It's a little like a big party: sure, there's some people you avoid, but there's also people you seek out as soon as you see them walk in the door.
Well bravo, Xoria. I agree some people may be jumping to the rulebook a little faster than their own guns, but I have to disagree with some of your other comments regarding the rules discussions.
Indeed some people do whine about the rules (and I'm by no means innocent of that), but what you seem to skip over is that there is no "ultimate" version of Discovery yet, and I'm hoping there won't be any time soon. To that effect, just about everything can stand to change.
Igiss decided long ago that Discovery would no longer be completely governed by his own pre-set rules and restrictions, but rather a mod for the Discovery community that had built around his initial builds. With every new release comes balances and unbalances that eventually get ironed out by the feedback we as the community provide. What cannot be coded is the behaviour of the players around the mod he has made, which is where the Admins come in. With every new change made to the mod or the community, there's a chance the players may react differently, sometimes unfavourably and certain rules may become obsolete or more of a hinderance to play than before. The only way these issues will ever get addressed by the Admins is feedback from us.
So what you may see as pages and pages of whining and griping over minor inconveniences may in fact be pages and pages of useful feedback on an issue the admins are trying to address.
The rules may be made for us, but to a big extent they're also made by us.

Badger, I agree with everything you said. After I wrote my post I figured someone would bring up that point. None of what you describe is what I was talking about, that sort of discussion is a separate matter entirely. The discussions that you describe leave the reader with a thoughtful, if not warm, feeling. The discussions I was talking about leave people mad, frustrated, upset, and pounding on the reply button.
We all know the difference between them.
Thanks for clearly illustrating the distinction for me, since I left that out.

I hope everyone reads your opening post and at least thinks about what you are saying.
Age is not a guarentee of wisdom or humility but you've had longer to search for them.
I take pride in believing there are no circumstances when I would report another player to admin. Others can cheat, break the rules, swear, or whatever. At the end of day the worst punishement is to just move away and not play with them. If they want to interact then they will learn to behave in a certain way.
(p.s. I'd rather be playing right now... but it is easier to hide being on the forum at work). :$
