The only thing that got "established" so far i belive is that not all pirates are the same. One would rather take revenge on a trader that has slipped by him, the other would gladly take his money and pretend like nothing happend. Guess thats about it.
So far I agree with everything Caylith and Bulldog wrote. If the trader gets away, fine for him.
But I have to announce something that makes me sick and tired.
Some people seem to have problems to distinguish between their own characters. Today, for the third time in a short period, a trader I am taxing (the usual 500.000) tells me on private channel "Do you know who I am???? In fact I am XXX from faction XXX, and you will regret that!!!")
Jesus, if we start not making a difference between characters, where will RP end? "Oh sorry, I can't fight you, you are my pal's 3rd character, and the other guy is my best friend's 4th character..."
So PLEASE STOP SPAMMING ME ON PRIVATE CHANNEL !
You have different characters? Then better start distinguishing between them, because I WILL.
Yes, that happens all the time. People just think another char is another ship by the same person.
And while i agree that pirates would maybe want do revenge by themselves, i must look back on what Equinox wrote.
He said he gives mercenaries 1 chance to get away.
I had a mercenary who was helping Corsairs, taking only their bounties. Always killed Outcasts and Blood Dragons.
And once, purely out of RP, i jump in Gamma and say "This is friendly mercenary "blabla", permission to pass trough Gamma sir?".
Answer : "GET HIM!!! He's going to Theta fast!!! Gamma is a death to mercenaries!!!"
Then i gave up.
There should be mercenaries working for unlawfulls too.

It is every Corsair's responsibility to die a beautiful death in defense of Crete, regardless of how OORP or how capwhoring the opposition is. Launch your fighter, joust the battlecruisers and die a beautiful death. Then, drink it down in the bar.
Equinox wasnt there most likely, it was probably me.
And you should know that most mercenaries that come to Gamma come to kill TBH and Benitez pilots.
How am I to know you're friendly? In fact, how am I to know that you wont switch sides when a large bounty is put on our heads? I dont, is the short answer. That is why mercenaries are not favoured in Gamma. There allegiances cannot be relied upon when push comes to shove. Maybe you were an exception, but you didn't prove it to me.
If it wasn't me there, then this is possibly what other people in TBH are thinking.
We've had bad experiences with mercs. Hence, we dont like them.
EDIT:
If this is thought from the traders point of view, why would they stop trading if they landed? They wouldn't and its unfair to suggest otherwise.
If a trader lands, bad luck, pick a better spot to pirate, like on a trade lane or in a border world. No bases there for quite a distance in any direction, and this is where pirates work anyway, not outside house planets or bases...
@ Exile: Its not revenge. If I'm following a trader and I see he has docked, he hasn't actually gotten away. If he manages to gain some distance from him and I cannot find him, then he's gotten away. Just because the trader docks does not mean he's home free. And if I choose to wait for him (regardless of where it is) then that's my right. You don't like it because it interferes with your trading. Guess what, if you pay me, I go away and you continue trading. If you don't pay me, I keep following you and waste your time. But that's not revenge - its call "strategy" or "tactics" to get traders to pay.
@ Maria.Fondevila: I too get sick and tired of these traders who threaten to come after me in their other ships or threaten me that when they buy their battleship they'll come looking for me. There is no RP with the common trader. They are all out to make the quick buck so they can buy that cool capship they want. And they'll do anything and lobby the admins to make rules to support their efforts. Just listen to what these guys are pushing for ... limiting the areas where a pirate can pirate. How absurd! They're just whining because they don't want to be pirated (ever).
@ McNeo: If the trader lands ... oh well ... I'll likely wait for him someplace close enough to see him on radar (most likely within 2k of the planet or base). Yes there are heavy military and police patrols. But if I choose to take that risk, its mine to take. Trade lanes and border worlds are safer for the pirate, but if we "house" pirates leave our fenced area, we get flamed or take the chance of an RP sanction for going outside of our fishbowl.
@ Caylith: All I am hearing in this thread is a bunch of Pirate bashing. Can we have this thread locked.
Wow Archelon, ond day we will agree on something.. But it's not today :D
1. I don't see much pirate bashing to be honest
2. I regulary play a pirate and I do not think piracy should be done close to House planets and installations. While I don't think their should be specific rules against pirating near house planets (God not more regulations). I do think it's un-RP behaviour.
3. I will pay pirates in my trader no problem unless I am pirated by a major planet or base, then I will simply dock and play as a different char or log off and make some coffee.
If you are pirating near a base or docking area, then you are not doing a good job of being a pirate anyways, so if you get pirated by a base or planet that is lawful, laugh to yourself and either A.) pay, B.) dock, or C.) RUN LIKE HELL! Do not choose D.) Curse and act OORP, or E.) All of the above.
While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack http://pastebin.com/SYQXBufs
' Wrote:Incorrect, on a number of accounts. Some pirates were well known for slaughtering the entire crew of captured ships. Not out of greed (they already had the cash), not for revenge... Just for fun, or to build their fearsome reputation. Also, characters in Discovery are unique individuals, not carbon-copies of the pirates of old nor Freelancer NPCs. If someone wants to play a pirate who will go to the ends of Sirius to exact revenge on a trader (or anyone else) who escaped/insulted him/whatever, then that's their choice of RP. Saying all pirates would prefer money over revenge is like saying all cops prefer justice over money. Pirates may be in it for the money, but that doesn't mean some things are more important.
Okay, but you agree that one can be flexible when RPing a faction?
Gas Miner's Guild.
We're a guild, that mines gas. Isn't that strange?
We supply Sirius with H-Fuel...like the Middle East supplies oil to the world.
So, put that in you pipe and smoke it...
