This really sounds great. It'll only include cap destructions, so what about also add different types of snub destructions. (Until now we have this immediate destruction and this "fire causing crash", where the ship makes some circles before it explodes.)
Jinx, one question. So, explosions and everything like that are client-based, they have nothing to do with server?
If so, there could be made 2 versions, for "much nicer" with stronger PCs, that would include all this nice stuff, and one "normal-we have now", for 1990s PCs, that wouldn't cause low FPS/lag.

The decals (debris) would be laggy if given their own momentum and hitbox. But the effects? Should be fine. Better explosions make blowing something up a lot more satisfying. I'll peg our effects guy to see if we can get some work done on this. As for choosing between fuses - not sure it's possible. I -think- so, since NPCs have some different death routines (sometimes going into a roll screaming before going boom).
[Edit] Would make major cap fights a bit of a health risk for photosensitive folk;)
