Jump-Projection Drive Information:





Commonly, and incorrectly, referred to as a 'standard' jump drive, the Jump Projection Drive is one of the most valuable pieces of experimental technology in The Order's possession. Based on the early hypergate experiments and designs which were largely unsuccessful in their goal, the Jump Projection Drive is an entirely new type of jump drive system. Utilizing Control crystals recovered from a dig site on Planet Nauru, the Jump Projection Drive is capable of creating an artificial jump hole and, through manipulation of the jump hole's gravity field, can designate an exit point for it.

The jump hole created by the drive emitter can be sustained for up to ten minutes at a time, and the endpoint is accurate within a 50,000 kilometer radius of the chosen destination. Due to the level of inaccuracy, while relatively low for the distances involved, care must be taken to choose locations of sufficient distance from stars, planets, asteroid fields, or other solar bodies. Once the Pakhet enters the artifical jump hole, the emitter is no longer linked with the entrance, and the jump hole collapses, preventing potential pursuit by enemy forces.

The range limitation of the Jump Projection Drive has not yet been reached, but based on theoretical power consumption rate, the drive is incapable of making jumps over distances further than 1,000 lightyears, and the destination error allowance grows as that distance increases.

Subject: First successful test of the Pakhet's Jump-Projection Drive

As part of the Pakhet's maiden voyage, we chose to test the new, experimental Jump-Projection Drive installed on the vessel. Once we had travelled to a safe distance of 25,000 Kilometers from the outlying solar bodies within Omicron 74, the drive was activated and linked to the outer regions of Omicron Mu. The plotted path would intercept only one system, Omicron Zeta, roughly halfway through the jump process.



The Jump sequence took approximately 257 seconds (4 minutes, 17 seconds). From 132 seconds to 149 seconds, a period of minor turbulence was experienced as the jump trajectory intersected solar bodies within the Omicron Zeta system. Jumphole stability was reduced by 2% during that timeframe, but was quickly recovered once outside Zeta's solar boundary.



Overall, the first field test of the Jump-Projection Drive was a great success. Minor route calculations and exits into black space may be necessary to avoid intersecting with multiple systems on longer routes and subsequent destabilizing of the jump hole. Power drain from the drive was within expected parameters, still far exceeding that of any conventional power generator. It should be noted that even the antimatter reactor installed aboard the Pakhet was strained heavily by the Jump Drive during the initial creation and stabilization of the artificial jump hole, however power levels remained consistent during the jump. In the future we will be testing the drive's distance potential, but I expect that significantly further destinations may require several jumps to prevent capacitor overloads within the projector.

Subject: Cartography Coordinate System

Essential to the Operation of the Jump-Projection Drive is the OSD's new Stellar Coordinate Acquisition Program, run via the Pakhet's onboard Cartography Suite. The Coordinate Aquisition Program utilizes a Sirius-Centered coordinate layout based on the known boundaries of the Sirius Sector. Previous galactic-scale cartography attempts have placed Sirius within the midsection of one of the Milky Way Galaxy's spiral arms, with the center of that arm running on a course diagonal to standard Sirian starmaps and intersecting Omicron Gamma and New York.

The destination coordinate format required by the Jump-Projection Drive is based on a relatively simple three-dimensional system. Omicron Minor's general solar center, for example, is at the Coordinates X:18.8, Y:9.3, Z:5.2. The majority of solar systems within the Sirius sector are small enough that manipulations to the hundredth-decimal will sufficiently span the width and breadth of the system.



The above image map is taken directly from the Cartography Suite's primary database, and shows the system used to target the coordinates of Omicron Minor. The X Coordinate refers to the span of sirius from the galactic rim to the galactic core (left to right), while the Y Coordinate is based on a 90 degree parallel to that, originating from the upper reaches of the Omicron 80 systems rather than from New york as most standard starmaps do. The Z Coordinate determines the destination's altitude above or below the standard galactic plane, and is represented by diagonal reference lines which are color-coded.

The Coordinates listed above for Omicron Minor reference the center of the system's gravitational influence, in this case jumping to those exact coordinates would likely put your vessel in the core of Planet Toledo. Alterations must be made to account for such solar bodies, via manipulation of the Hundredth Decimal. Due to the number of focusing surfaces within the Jump-Projection Drive's emitter array, it is not currently possible to focus the endpoint past the hundredth decimal, leading to the drive's 50,000 Kilometer margin-of-error which forces jumps to be made a safe distance away from known solar objects.

Subject: Analysis of the Emitter Array

The Jump-Projection Drive's primary component is a large emitter array, approximately ten meters in diameter and extending twice that distance into the ship's interior. The Emitter array contains six seperate focusing rings, each with twice as many focusing surfaces as the previous ring. The outer ring, which is the only visible portion of the array, consists of twelve focusing surfaces, while the next ring in contains twenty four, the next contains forty eight, ninety six, so on and so forth, with the innermost ring containing seven-hundred and sixty eight focusing surfaces from which the initial gravity well is generated. In total, there are one-thousand five hundred focusing elements which all work in unison to generate and manipulate an artifical gravity well through which the ship may travel.
