Hello and welcome, I'm glad you've decided to play the campaign, its really fun and funny at times. Another great resource is the discovery wiki, which can be found here: http://discoverygc.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Some of the info is out of date, but in general, this is a good place to start. Another thing you can do to help you get updated on what's happening is read a lot of the rumors in game; you just go into a station's bar and click on the NPCs with a speech bubble above their heads. Hope you like the storyline, you seem like a very nice guy who's willing to learn, which is always a good skill in Discovery.
Lastly, one fo the best ways to learn your way around is to join a player faction. May I suggest finding an NPC faction that you like, reading up on its lore, then playing as an indie (A non-factioned, but NPC faction affilaited person) for maybe 2 weeks. After that, I'd suggest joining the official faction of the NPC faction you were choosing. If you've got any questions about factions, feel free to ask.
As always, have a good day and have fun out there.
