There actually is a system ingame where you can trade ingame currency for cryptic points at a stupidly low rate. So if you have 30467394586954 hours of free time per day, you can technically access all content.
Quote:'Free' means you have to pay the get better stuff or access to endgame content, right?
Nope. From what I've seen so far, main currency are C-Points, that you can buy for money. But I think I saw somewhere in game, that you can exchange ingame goods for C-points, like dilithium.

Yeah, paying real cash just saves you lots of ingame time grinding for those features. But that's why I actually play, it's not gonna cost me one dime for that.
It's actually pretty good game. Ofcourse, you can't compare it to freelancer, in terms of movment and targeting. Basically, you can speed your ship up and down, and then move it up, down, left and right. Combined with turret/weapon positioning (some weapons have for example 45° targeting arc, some 360°, etc.), you have to keep your ship well positioned towards enemy stuff. Plus 'abilities' (from you and your crew) also play key role, those little bufs that last for few seconds.
Other fun stuff is visiting friends ship, bridge, going on ground missions... ... After all, pretty interesting game with lot of interesting missions/stuff to do.
Now when it's F2P, nothing stops you from trying it out, then ragequiting later, if you don't like it, since you didn't invest your money or something (sun)

Hmm. Guess I'll give it a try. Thou it would be better if I could get my time-millionaire friends who live from c-points to migrate there before I come. :)Nowadays they inhabit Champions Online.
the ground pvp where you run after each other like team fortress is also quite fun:D
and the lore is quite good: the mission arcs are fitting to the general star trek universe.
ship battles are very much like star trek capital ship battles.
Also, borg battles are FUN.. and HARD.
The game also gives you 3 ships for free at each rank promotion all the way to captain. Captain and higher level ships require Dilithium (you grind it in game but it doesn't take forever to find them, you get quite a sum from missions and crew experience etc) some uber high level ships require C credits (cash requiring part). You can also buy credits for dilithium. There is a market for that as well. So, yes, technically you don't have to pay for anything. There are also day bonuses like 400 days logged in gives you some special access to special stuff etc.
The battle system looks simplistic first, but it requires some tactics to beat your opponnent. Elite encounters etc definitely need brains and group understanding. battles with hard opponents (like the borg) punishes you for stupid combat. dying doesn't cost anything and you can respawn. missions (not the story ones but random encounters like borg attack etc) have time limits, etc.
if you are a star trek fan, the game is adorable.
Actually, check the battle scenes of Star Trek Nemesis, the battles in game are pretty much like that (except for the bridge view while battling).

Noob question here, how and where do you precisely get Dilithium from? I'd be pretty interested in that.
