It's an IRP shrine to what is a dead IRP leader of a religious sect. There are other such references in Disco - Someone referencing Blackie out in Pecos references the character of a CR player that passed away prior to the 4.86 first release. There's probably more that I don't know about.
My point? So long as it's not a direct reference to the player, I do not see an issue here.
As for blowing it up - what's the point. What reason would a capital-heavy or bomber-heavy fleet have to go into Baffin and start tearing up the place... It makes little sense to me. The only folk they've pissed off so far are the GRN, and the "Elusive Gallic Player" is a rare entity on this server so far. (Although I admit the Valors make excellent base deconstructors)
Wide awake in a world that sleeps, enduring thoughts, enduring scenes. The knowledge of what is yet to come.

I figure it all boils down to this: It's a base named in honor of its founder, and on this server, bases can be destroyed...it's only pixels.
If someone gets offended at the thought of that, it's only because they choose to be offended by it. They shouldn't bring their own baggage about death & lay it on someone else just because they're dead.
Doug's memory isn't all balled up into a single base. It's spread out between the ones that remember him & if he were here, I'm positive that if there were any plans to attack the place, he would participate (if not spearhead an attack himself) and love every second of it all with his multiple characters.
Shrines are cool & all but I reckon the best way to honor his memory is to have fun playing the game by loosing yourself in a character & try to inspire the creativity within those you play with. If that leads to collaborative RP, then that's even cooler.
I'm not touching the issue of the base naming anymore. What concerns me just a bit is this:
' Wrote:Unless you are a troll, who would want to go into Baffin and destroy a player base in there anyway?

Having obvious enemies isn't a prerequisite to having your base be in jeopardy. It's a big thing that can be destroyed. Some people don't needs reasons. Some people "just want to watch the world burn", as the quote goes. Throwing up your hands and saying, "Pfft, who'd want to attack TAZ anyway?" is almost an invitation to do just that.
I think you may be slightly underestimating the number of people who have a bone to pick with TAZ, or even Zoners in general.
Ya know, there was an important lesson Mal taught me when I was stressing heavy over FP1.
He basically said "don't take this pile of pixel BS too seriously, its all for fun anyway."
If it blows up, so what, TAZ can build another. If some one artificially invents a reason to blow it up, so what, TAZ will get some fun pew out of it (TAZ isn't all zoner whale, ya know...)
And in the end, people will move on to something else to troll\enjoy
Well, see, I'm not worrying about TAZ having issues if it blows up. That never was my concern.
I'm worrying about myself having issues if I ever have to blow it up. That's the thing. I'm particular about Death due to personal (religious) choices in life. I personally do not have a reason to do such a thing, but Zoner diplomacy is so FUBAR that you never know.
This may sound harsh, but it's really not: The ideal of the server is to treat it like a stage while you're on it. ...So unless you have a bad habit of projecting your RL outlooks/fears/ect onto your fictional characters, it shouldn't be a problem to roll with things as they happen and react purely in character. I mean, You & I agree that Zoner diplomacy is fubar but hey, that's just the way it is. Our personal opinions on zoner diplomacy should be irrelevant & focus instead on how the fubariness of it all affects our characters in character.

So chill guys, it ain't even an issue.
This.
+1
Mal was a kick ass kind of guy and I don't think he'd want us bickering over something as silly as this.
Regardless of someone would even go in there to destroy it, the fact of the matter is IT IS DESTRUCTIBLE. The players in the TAZ knew this. Or at least they should know this.

Bad form, imho.
EDIT: Well, no, not exactly what I wanted to say. Just saw this and went...dafuq did I just see.
I understand people miss those who passed away, but is something like this really necessary? Have a gettogeather during the summer holidays, perhaps, drink to the fellow, but I think I am not the only one, who fears to see what happens when a group of mugs try to destroy this base. Especially the OORP consequences.
I think you should STFU and have some respect for a person the TAZ greatly respected, you Spasticated Hackzor Retard. Why did they unban you anyway .......
