I was bored earlier and was thinking about the server and it's current restart mechanics and how it's a system wide restart/ion storm. now what if instead of restarting the entire system of sirius have it where each system can be reset individually per hour and have a server wide restart once every few days or so. not only would this allow us to continue to enjoy our freelancer experience but it would add a unique system to the game of randomized ion storms in systems.
here's an example of what i mean.
the systems would reset randomly once per hour with only one or two systems experiencing ion storms maybe more depending on the "Severity" of the storms. after those systems have had a restart they would be removed from the randomization list for 24 hours. the restarts would proceed like this until a set time during the week where the entirety of the sirius sytem experiences the ion storm.
not really sure if that explained it well enough but leave your comments about what you think of this idea. if it even can be implemented i think it would be a great addition to the game.
Firstly, I'm not sure wherther this could be implemented or not. Secondly, why change it? Afaik, the whole "ion storm" idea is purely a mechanism to cover the restart.
You know the old saying: If it aint broke, don't mend it.
That's not how the server works. Ion Storms are not an in-game feature - they're just a name you can use if you need to reference a server shut down (as vaguely as possible) when roleplaying. The server hosts every system in Sirius simultaneously - when the server shuts down, the entire game is offline.

I thought it would be a nice effect to add in the game.

When the server restarts, it's only down for 1-3 minutes or something like that; it's not like for instance EVE's daily 30 minute downtime.
I thought it would be a nice effect to add in the game.

i know that's why i said if it can be implemented.

i know they aren't an in-game feature but if they were able to do the restarts like this it would add a nice effect to the game that could become a in-game feature.

I'm still confused how randomly causing people to be booted from the server in the middle of RP would be a good feature to add...

they wouldnt be booted, there would still be an automated message that only the people in the affected system would be able to see, giving them enough time to either leave the system or dock.
A really nice idear to convert that RP-cover-saying of a ooRP need into a real feature!
But I think it's hardly possible without reprogramming the whole game. A partlike restart is simply put thing the programmers thought about at the time freelancer was born.
I guess Guild Wars (old) could do it, respectively has done it. Instantiated and hosted on a cluster of servers one server is easily able to take over another servers activities / duties so that that one can be shut down without any notice of the player comunity.
However I might be wrong. I don't know enough about IT to give a proofed suggestion.
To the stars!
