Pretty much. And hell I am trying to learn this all the time =P
I saw the topic title and thought ohh this one again.
But as Echo said

at the moment we have a problem with fewer players online and even fewer RP`ers.
But the lack of players was the same when 4,86 was about to hit a DL close to you.
When 4,87 hits the DL section server will be full again, for 5-6 months again, and then player count will slowley drop to a stable count.
That is the cyclus of Disco.
But to OP great post one of the best i have seen for a long time.
I am not a native English Speaker, so i make grammar errors.
But it annoys me when people make silly comments about that... especially brits who for the most part can't speak their own language let alone anyone elses!
Discovery is more or less the flagship of Freelancer now. Besides this one there are barely any populated servers anymore, if any at all.
Freelancer is also an old game but it's concept is so good and the opportunities so ripe that it's still going due to the power of coding. I'll be here for a fair while I think, whether that can be said for a lot of others I don't know but the OP was a very pleasant read regardless of peoples opinion.

As long as there are people willing to learn and get into RP, isn't it a good thing for new people to join?
I was the same as you when I started over a month ago, you'll pick it up in no time I promise. Also, you'll realise why the server is so popular due to the RP concept.
Vanilla FL servers died because the game is old, vanilla servers got to an end point very quickly as the OP rightly said. People move onto flashy new games with flashy graphics that require a power plant of a computer to run. They forget that old games such as FL have so much potential with expansions, graphics based mods and all that jazz. Still the best MMO to date in my opinion, Discovery helping that...a lot.
I once saw a bumper sticker that said 'Disco is Dead', it made me laugh because it never died. Yeah it may not be filling the dance floor anymore, but folks are still rocking it. Just like Freelancer. You know how many people still play Starcraft? Lots. You know how many people still play X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter? And I'm not even sure theirs been any major mods or updates to that old horse at all. So as long as at least some of the 10,000+ people in just the GC community keep loggin in it aint going nowhere.
(P.S. Star citizen? Are you F*%^*'N kidding me? You basically have to pay cash, like real money to get a good ship. It looks like a cool game, but only if your willing to pay for a crazy subscription. I have a feeling that game will just make FL look better. Keep up the great work Dev's!)

NOPE
Server was full for way less than 6 months, .87 is far far away, and .85 server was full even quite some time after release.(Dont look at my join date, not my first account)
Player count HAS droped, reasons for it are debatable, but in the end it all came down to changes the COMUNITY desired, position COMUNITY took, actions COMUNITY performed players, COMUNITY chased away etc. So what i mean is the only way to un-screw disco is if YOU, not someone else, becomes a better/nicer person. Kudos to you if you are doing it right now. Anyone telling that someone else is to blame is just hypocrite.
