Is it just my imagination or are the Colonial Remnant some kind of Greece?
Thanatos, Zephyr, Kronos, Argus, Nyx... All figures who are related to Greece Mythology.
I don't know if this was intentional or not by the devs, but there are no Africans included. Did they leave the blacks on Earth to die?
Perhaps a Zulu faction should be added.
Ye, we got no mention of Balkan states minus Greece. I suppose countries like Croatia would be a part of Hispania as its a Mediterranean country. They could have at least named a cloud or two after each.
Rheinland likely had a sizable Scandinavian population (Swedish, Danish, Fin etc). This is doubly evident due to the fact that the entirety of the Rheinland vanilla line was named after Norse mythos. It also wouldn't be too surprising to see Polish or any other nearby states such as Luxembourg.

you see the odd black at the bar every now and then.

How about, no?
I'm an Indian and I'm pretty sure I've never seen any mention of India in the original freelancer lore nor the discovery lore. Indian culture simply isn't compatible with communism. Yes, we have a communist party in RL, but they're barely influential for a multitude of reasons and the two years when India was a Social Republic during the 70s were full of instability because the Indian people simply wouldn't accept communism. Furthermore, in RL right now, India is a democracy and it is moving closer and closer towards the US sphere of influence as one of India's geopolitical rivals are China, which in discovery lore happens to be a coalition country.
Furthermore, as Zynth (I think) mentioned, there is a significant population of Indians (and other south asians like Pakistanis and Bangladeshis) in the UK, hence they would've gone with the Bretonia. Also, there are 1 million Indians in Canada, so some of them would've gone with the Liberty too. Turks are a large minority inside modern day Germany hence the turkish population would've been continued on with the Rheinland ship.
You have to realise that the country chosen had almost colonised the entire world. France: Indochina, Sub-saharan Africa and parts of the middle east. Britain: India, Aus/NZ, Kenya + other african and middle eastern countries. Spain: Pretty much all of south and central america.
As a result, it is possible for virtually every minority to be represented in disco as most of the colonising nations (france, spain, UK) have large minorities from their former colonies. After 800 years, it is likely they would've culturally integrated almost completely.
Only a few thoughts i had, after i´ve read this thread.
First i have to say i do agree with Ceoran. We don´t speak about races here. I would go one step further than him and call mankind and chimpanzees different races of one species, but this is rather personal and in no way the view of the most humans.
But here we speak about different nationalities, that is all.
Then i agree with Omicron, that the first passengers on the sleeperships were scientists and engineers, but aside these people i think the most richest had a chance to get a place aboard. So i would not wonder, that Microsoft did not spend one little thought about people of the different nations in so called Black Africa. Sadly they do not count today, why should they do in freelancer?
Different to this i would say, the most coalition passengers were, if not scientists, then high members of the communist party.
Black people i would consider to have been passengers on the Liberty, as both Americas have big black communities. So this is reason enough to have a lot of black faces ingame. Maybe some of them also were passengers of the Gallia or Bretonia, as France and Britain also have big black communities. Also some of the "Arabs" i would see as passengers on the French sleepership. (And maybe, cause of the raising influence of CHina in Africa now, maybe some of the Africen nations had a chance to come aboard the Coalition sleepership).
The use of old names like Odin or Thor would not only be a sign for a Scandinavian population on the Rheinland, as this old myths are part of "German" history as well. But for me it would fit as it would fit, if the Scandinavians would have been aboard the Bretonia. Maybe they had a chance for both ships.
But, if i look how small the sleeper ships were, i would think, the most humans died on the dying planet. If some of the minor nationalities had any chance to come aboard - now, 2000 years later they only do exist as a memory of ancient times. Some of the cultural mannerisms may have survived, but then as an integral part of one of nations we now have in Sirius.
So i see all the mediterran people on the Hispanic and now part of the both "Hispanic nations.
Kusari in my view is most of the far east part of Asia except China. Maybe some of the people there joined the Coalition, but the others did use the Kusari sleepership. A main part of the population for sure was Japanese but not all.
And i totally disagree with Mister_X about the Swiss. If they had a chance, they used the Rheinland for escaping. The Zoners in fact are freaks out of the sirius population, freaks of all nationalities. Look to the Zoner lore, this is obvious.
And at least Ceoran: no furries? Damn i play a Primus native ingame. I try to do this serious, as i was and am a big fan of the planet of the apes movie. And i play him as a scientist and a Zoner according to the Zoner influence on this planet long ago.
But... Are "apes" from Primus furries? I think not.
