I've only recently joined the Disco in the past few weeks, and I've been on the RP server a total of 25+ hours. My character is Tilion; some of you all may have seen me around. I know I've talked to a few of you, but I've got a few questions that, as a newb to the Disco, I've not found answers for in my own searching.
I'm level 33 with a Slipstream with Rogue and Outcast guns. I made my first million on my own so I could get a feel for the server before joining any particular group. I'm neutral with everyone except the Bounty Hunters (sorry guys), Xenos, Wild, and Kusari Navy. I realize that soon I'll need an ID tag for my char. The idea that I'm going for in the Disco is a bit of a Han Solo role, if you recall SW. He did a bit of smuggling, took on odd jobs, fought as a fighter, and was overall independent for himself, but assisted where he was needed.
So what areas would this role fall under? Its like a combo of a smuggler and pirate, even some legal trading, but I don't soley want to be just a trader/smuggler, or soley a pirate. I'd like to simply take on any contract, job, trade, smuggling, or mission for anyone who needs it to be done. The question is: Is this too broad for Disco? Do I need to narrow it down to the lawful or unlawful? Can anyone suggest or advise a faction that this alludes to? I was thinking it seems to be a role of an actual Freelancer...possibly Zoner?, but where to get the IDs, I'm having trouble for the Freelancer faction.
Beyond that, knowing what my ship is, and my weaponry, can I RP as a freelancer or similar idea and still keep the ship and weapons? I've read in the rules, that the RP must match your ship, guns, etc. Personally, I'd like to be able to use what I can find wherever, rather than being tied down to one faction's equipment.
And please, tell me if none of it or part of it is possible. I don't want to continue playin and searchin, and by the time I get to level 40+, make an uninformed decision and end up with something I really don't like.
And if it is possible for my RP idea to happen, would anyone direct me in the direction to go. You don't need to lay it all out for me, but guidance would be much appreciated.
While it seems you have genuine good intentions with that rp, I've noticed that the community tends to frown on the jack-of-all-trades approach. A lot of people in the past have used it as a flimsy cover for their characters so they could pvp, collect the absolute best weapons in the game (even if they come from completely contradictory sources), and use the best ship all while saying that they collected it all from odd jobs across the galaxy. If you really played the role well and documented a lot of it on the forums, and made it clear you weren't just collecting the best of everything so you're god-like in your ship, it might be fine.
As for ID, you could go a number of routes. As a junker, you could smuggle, mine, trade, do an occasional odd job, but it's more to the unlawful side and I'd have trouble imagining a Junker doing lawful missions, especially since the Liberty folks are somewhat hunting down Junkers (I seem to recall, from bar rumors, that they half-heartedly hunt Junkers to keep up public appearances). As a Zoner, you wouldn't be able to do most combat since you're neutral with all, but any kind of trade would be acceptable (there seem to be many Zoner trader/smugglers of late). Going the mercenary route might work and I think it's the most fitting for your rp, but several Houses have a ban on mercenaries in their space, so that would restrict your movement (or just be sneaky about it).
I'm rather new here myself, so I may be wrong about some of the above (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I am), but those are just my observations. Good luck.
You wouldn't be too limited in terms of equipment usage if you are planning to RP a freelancer. I would suggest you to hang onto developing your relationship with Zoners though, as they deal with quite efficient technology. There should also be some viable options that are to be searched through the universe I guess..
I would suggest something of the QCP bent....good guys in bretonia, Mercs when they need a job, Privatteers in the service of the queen in Kusari, and so forth, barring that, you could take the approach of being a localized revolutionary outside of their Zoi, and as such, a lawful (GC, or BD, are illegals in Kusari, but treated reasonably friendly in Bretonian space, and the opposite for Gaians).
Thats an RP, unfortunately, the IDs are rather restricting in that sense....Merc could work, as could BHG, or Freelancer, or a specific group's ID.
Wish you well.

Tilion, in all seriousness, you are exactly the sort of player who ought to join up with one of the clans immediately.
I don't say this to your discredit at all, but to your credit. You want to learn, you want to play with others responsibly, you want to contribute to other people's gameplay. The BEST way to learn what you want to learn is by joining a clan that will help you learn them. No amount of explaining on the forum can replace experience on the server learning from the "veterans". You don't have to spend all of your time with just one clan, you can branch out like most players do. You may even find it better not to actually join the clan, but to create a character with the same roleplay/purpose as one of the clans, and get them to "mentor" you until you get the hang of things. That is a superb way to go if you are sure that you would be exiting the clan after a while anyway.
You ought to restrict your ambitions a lot before expanding them. There is a lot to learn about the way things are done at Disco, and you are going to overwhelm yourself by trying to take on so much so soon.
So, choose a group of players who you think you can learn from, start a character to join them (as a clan member or as an independent) and get them to mentor you. You'll thank me later, trust me.
Disco needs many more players just like you. My advice will serve you well (if you choose the right mentors).

Just play nice and it seems that forum participation will get many to not judge you so harshly. Haveing at least a ships log will help so folks can see your not just equiping for PVP, but for logical reasons. If you play and dont post your life gets alot tougher. I wish I took the approach you took here, when I first started. It would have prevented the stygma, I seem to have with my name (might be in my head), but live and learn, your on the right track I think.
*points at sig* BLS, 66th, and LPI. I like you, the good-type of newb, the kind that uses correct grammar, wants to learn, and RP. I don't use 'newb' in a derogatory meaning now, I mean it as you are a new player. I would suggest the LPI, as we exhibit excellent RP (on account of how much our PvP is nerfed, being in LFs only, with a couple of SWAT bombers) and are known to help new people.
And I agree wholeheartedly with my friend Xoria there -- you and your kind are in short supply, and every faction that wants new blood will be after you. Oh, and yes. Post RP, people love that. I got 5 of 'em, 4 in my sigs.
Anyway, I look forward to meeting you in game! I love new people like you. In a completely non-gay, heterosexual way, of course. *ahem*
Hell for what its worth, I HATE PvPing. As a Freelancer, unless someone's in danger or something, I couldn't give a sh*t about what is going on. People are more worried about the fact that I am flying a BH Gunship than a piece of stray scrap metal. People just WANT enemies...
While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack http://pastebin.com/SYQXBufs
