You need variety! Get a Grass or Electric type pokemon with Paralyze-effect (Thunder Wave, Stun Spore) or Sleep-effect (Sleep Powder) moves that make the wild pokemon easier to catch. Poison, Burn, and Frozen effects also work, but the first two do damage-per-turn (putting you on a time limit) and moves with the latter effect are rarely encountered in the first generation. I can't remember if Confused-status makes them easier to catch but it's usually cleared fairly quickly.
Addendum: This thread has encouraged me to go check out Heart Gold. I still have my original Gold version cartridge for GBC, still functional. It has a level 100 Typhlosion that I couldn't bear to part with.
Heh, I played Pokemon Crystal during the long rides and flights in the USA on my iPhone.
Bit out of boredom but also nostalgia.
First played Pokemon Blue when my grandfather bought it for me when I had my blind gut removed (was a disaster by the way. Sat in hospital for over three weeks.) Thank god I had that Gameboy. I think I was seven years-old at that time.
Amazed by the Pokemon world, I later bought Pokemon Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Sapphire and Emerald. Even that Trading Card Game for the GBC was awesome.
Pokemon Blue is still my favorite. Never liked the Pokemons which came after. Those 150 were perfect, and the game was still a bit difficult back then.
Oh man, so many memories! Playing Red and Crystal, those were sweet. Also had Trading card game which ruled and Pokemon Pinball (not that good).
As for a few more unusual games, did anyone here ever play Pokémon Colosseum for the Nintendo Gamecube? That truly was a fantastic game to and it's sequel Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness was fun to.
So wait, now I have to go back to the beginning and start acquiring new peeplings all over again :<

Pretty much right now, tho I did finally get my hands on an Onyx by slapping them with the wind attacks to at least NOT make it die with one hit...

The catchphrase for the first series was "Gotta catch em all" for a reason you know!
Oh and don't worry, you can buy a Magikarp for $500 in the pokemon centre before Mt.Moon anyways. But you'll have to train it up a bit before it's useful. It's weak tackle you get at lv15 will help with catching more weak pokemon though.
