Kind of interesting, but I find it really weird that the ships look like they are going 40 miles per hour in a planetary battle... then again I guess ships are pretty slow in space in this game too. I dunno, it bugs me.

Eh I would personally rather just see more dyson sphere kind of things happening instead of planetary battles, more cool giant space structure things and stuff.

Twice as many systems = twice as few activity. Also more memory consumption. It would be great, but I think Disco is still not ready for it.

I never said that we should have it for every planet, but only Planet Leeds.

If it's for frontline planets only, then I almost completely agree. The catch is that, if Leeds gets it, players will request it for other planets as well.

I strongly oppose this.
Not because it would be a copy, that's not my issue. I just think Freelancer is a space combat game and should stay that way.
Besides, it would thin out activity even more because every planet's atmosphere is kinda like a new system.
Then, it would also require MASSIVE development efforts that are better directed at other issues.
I also don't see the benefit of it, without ground troops and different physics on the planet. The way Crossfire does it, it's just a change of scenery.

It's not hard to make, though I expect that soon enough all of the community will ask for this.

As for planetary defense, you can add platforms (without HP, or with doesn't matter much), with a huge range. I know it's possible, since it has been done already.

EDIT: As for Leeds - as the battle goes on, you can change some of the platforms IFF, thus showing the progress of the conquest. Perhaps a result of an event dunno.

Would be awesome. I see benefits:

1. getting there via docking rings. So... NO CAPS!
2. bomb NPC ground facilities missions (some can be done with cloaks much easier, some with Hellfires, some with Novas only, some need teamwork...)
3. events: dogfights, ground assaults (like destroy/defend some ground facilities at some sector, or capture their NPC commander, or assassinate famous pop-star during visiting the planet...)

But if it makes more lag and/or FPS issues - than I vote NO. It's old engine afaik, it can't use our PCs well enough. I'd always vote for solving lag first.

I don't see any problem with that as long as its only available at the frontier, or leading planets - and I wouldn't worry about memory "consumption" - either RAM or HDD.

As for the memory consumption there's really nothing to worry about.

However, as far as the missions idea goes - it'd be kind of impossible to destroy these facilities , except perhaps with novas because of the range issues.
