I've been stewing over this for a while now, and I figured, with my extremely limited knowledge of FL's engine, that it MIGHT be possible. Basically, my gripe is with the Nav Map and Autopilot. As we all know, the Nav Map will not allow you to plot any routes involving Jumpholes; everything must be done with Jumpgates. It will not allow you to bypass the Tradelanes, if reason can be found to do so. Is there any way to force it to recognize Jumpholes and Jumpgates as the same entity or something, or even something else that will somehow allow it to plot along Jumpholes, and make more indirect routes through multiple systems?
My second concern it the Autpoilot itself. Basically, once you're to a waypoint, engines slow and cut, and the vessel waits at that point for instructions to continue alog a plotted course. Is there a way to stimulate it to follow waypoints all the way to the target of its own volition, even across the whole Universe map?

AKA...can we put our trading vessels on autopilot and grab dinner?
The jumphole thing is definately worth looking into. It's always fun to see the "No Best Path" message come up when you've already flown it in your navmap.
I tend to hand-plot my course anyway, using the jumpholes I know. In my mind, it's what the captain would do anyway.
But the super-auto-pilot following the whole path...I don't think that'll be implemented just because of the above.
I know for a fact that JH's can be incorporated into the "Find Best Path" function of the navmap, there was an add-on mod that allowed for just that. I used it in SP a long, long time ago. Didn't always work to perfection but was a definite improvement.

An add-on mod? I wonder how easily incorporated it could be to Discovery. "Interspace Commerce today unveiled the newest technology for traders. An upgrade to their navigation software that would allow discovered jumpholes to be integrated into the auto-waypoint systems standard on all starships. Ageira Corp would not comment, but issued a press release stating
'The use of unregulated JumpHoles instead of Ageira TradeLanes and JumpGates poses a danger to pilots everywhere, and we wholeheartedly denounce use of this technology.'
Naturally, Interspace Commerce believes that this will benefit everyone, stating 'The Bounty Hunters have been using JumpHoles for their entire existance, and have been involved in testing from the start. They give their seal of approval, and you should too.'"
They already can. It's called Datastorm, and even if they don't use it it's not too much of a challenge...besides, in most cases, it IS faster to go through a lawful system to get to another lawful system. It's in the Border Worlds this comes in handy, and I tend to think that it would be easier to work with, overall, especially since you've already explored the Jumpholes, most likely...
Actually, it's not so much 'grab dinner' as it is 'finish my damn RP, dammit!' I fly windowed and write while I'm en route, it would be nice to have a timer set and let the computer do all the work so I'm not interrupted as easily. In addition, if you're stupid enough to do what I do...well, sucks to be you when the Man-Purse hurtles out of nowhere and frags you:P

Meh, it just seems to me that when you use the ingame map that you're being in-character, and Datastorm etc would be out of character. Maybe I'm wrong:unsure:
Anyway, it would definitely make things more convenient for everyone. I'm a slow typer, so a better autopilot would help me tremendously.
No, no, no. If I remember correctly, it only used JH's that you had actually found. Again it was some time ago, so I don't remember exactly, but I think you had to actually find the JH's first.
