Ever since I started playing Disco I had the urge to make a video highlighting some systems.
So, after almost a year playing, the urge got too strong finally and I did make one.
The initial idea was to actually add some spoken words regarding different locations (reading the inforcards for instance), but thankfully I decided to spare everyone from my terrible accent and added some music instead.
Anyways, even if labeled "#1", I'm not sure when or if I'll make another one yet. Depends on my mood, I guess.
Kudos to the devs who created new or edited already existing systems, all other devs and to Bo and the people who made the mods used in his Swag Pack.
Beautiful! Bravo! Well done!
The cinematography combined with the music was excellent! I can't wait for the next installment.
Perhaps record Omega-49? That's a beautiful system.
Or maybe go down a darker route, and capture the sadness and suffering found in Omicron Minor.
That second shot, the barrier gate station, was BY FAR the best shot and angle of it I have EVER SEEN!
GENIUS! It made me feel for that time that it was a fantasy setting and not a sci-fi!
I liked the video. I feel like I've heard this music somewhere, but I just can't put the name on it.
I may not know how to edit videos, but IMO the scenes could've been organized better.
- When you started off with the warp-in, that was good. But the transition on 0:05 felt painful. I'd rather have preferred you stuck with the normal warp-out animation of normal Freelancer, that would've been awesome.
- After that, you could've stayed at the spot for approximately 4 seconds in total silence (to let the viewer acclimatize from the jump), then slooooowly start moving the camera forwards as the music starts to play.
- Then switch to scene 0:30-1:05 via a slow-fade animation, to keep the momentum slow.
- I felt scene 1:05-1:32 should've been shorter (like, only up to 1:22), then switch to cruise-speed camera
- The transition you did at 1:32 also felt painful. Should've stuck with the slow-fade transition, to keep the slow momentum after watching Barrier Gate.
- I loved how you matched the coming-out-of-the-nebula part with the thundering music, but the scene after that (2:00-2:19) felt dragging, since it was too long. Shouldve been divided into two scenes: the first scene (6 seconds) being the same, transition to the second through slow-fade animation, doing a panoramic view in one direction for 12 seconds
- At 2:36-2:56, you should've started the panoramic view from the station, turning to the right INSTEAD of the left (avoiding the nebula, because it's a mass of boring white)
- Didn't like that transition animation at 2:56, rather than using a slide-sweep to the left, should've used a fast-gradient sweep to the RIGHT (or, if you followed the above, a fast-gradient sweep to the LEFT then), to keep with the viewer's pacing than interrupt his immersion
- Would've been AWESOME if a fleet of capital ships were passing by horizontally, cruising from a distance of around 5-10k at 3:07-3:33.
- At 3:33, shouldn't have shown the JG at the very start. Would've liked it better if the JG comes into the view from the right edge, and that the camera was a little farther.
Now, I don't wish to just be a skeptic to such a fine piece of work, made by a potential great artist. I would love to help you in making future vids like these, make sure the transitions are done right, if the mood was properly set, etc. etc.
EDIT: Honestly, It'd be best if we talked via Skype Video Chat, so I can comment on the video real-time and properly communicate the vision and movie in my head.
Thanks for the surprisingly positive feedback so far, the recommendations and the very well received constructive criticism (feel free to hit me up on Skype leo, my contact info is on my profile - that's why it is there).
In my "defence": I basically used all the footage, I recorded prior. So there wasn't much to choose from... the scenes used in the video were pretty much all I had at my disposal.
However, I did this for fun and am not educated in making movies, so yeah "wrong" transitions happened here and there and some moments were dragged out bit, but hey. I enjoyed making it nontheless.
So far I'm considering Texas as the next system... I'll see, when I feel like actually making it.
Again, thanks! Feels like it was even worth more making it, since not only I seemed to enjoy the end product.
The Track was "Colonial Anthem" composed by Bear McCreary from the 2nd season soundtrack from Battlestar Galactica by the way.
