I have one simple proposal. Currently the possibility for a trader to pay depends on the cargo, their ship, the time wasted to get to the point they are now and such. Right now we buy cargo for 500 and sell for 4k. How about we buy for 5000 and sell for 44 000?
That will make the trader think twice before flying alone and essentially, the profit is the same as it is now. Just more risk involved.
Yes, I've said this before myself.
It's an excellent idea, the fact that you can fill a 5K for less than 2 million on some routes is ridiculous.
However I think 10x is a bit too much, they should also pop in some high risk, high return investments, buy for 10000, sell for 100000 for example.
Pirates can make more money, and it's more fun for the trader because they take more risk, and would have to plan their route and think about avoiding pirates, instead of "oh this crago is only worth 2 million, sells for 15, who cares if a pirate stops me in the next system".

This was tried with the mining mod, and it failed horribly.

A transport should not be able to kill a bomber, and this has happened to me a few times, (when they were cheating by using macros to chainfire Charons), or even with those high refire transport guns.
I might switch to a GB...
Not all transports are armed, eg. My 5k doesn't even have weapon slots
I believe that demanding more than 100% of possible profit/cargo is abusive.
To comment about OP Trade ships:
Those who buy Armor Upgrade should be harder to take down. Battletransports are fine as they are now - they sacrifice profit/time in order to be safe from extortion in most cases.
Stop complaining. Or try pirating in PTrans. Or unarmored LF ^^
As for calculating what percentage of cargo profit I can tax people.. Oh let me just open up FLC, check all the sellpoints, check the one I THINK you might be going to, do the math quick, and tab back in to see you gone.
No thanks. Oh, and you're forgetting one key thing. Cargo piracy. Especially in the terms of Xenos; why on EARTH would we take only a percentage of the cargo and let them continue spitting in the face of Liberty? Or if you're a ptrans/have a buddy in a transport, why on EARTH would you take only a third of the cargo if you could hold more?
I really don't care if pirates demand 100% of worth if they want to calculate it all out. Money piracy is only a convenience to conventional cargo piracy of ye old seafaring days pirates were started on. They took your ship, sold you into slavery or just killed you, took all your cargo, and drank your last beer.
tl;dr Space is dangerous, get over it. As long as what's being demanded isn't utterly ridiculous or impossible, suck it up and fight or buy your way out if your life holds meaning.
Pirating is done for sake of pirating not for making cash. Making cash withpiracy is secondary goal just like bounty hunting. So just remember that you're doing it for fun and it's bad for business to screw over the traders from yourself - it's like killing all the deers in the forest when you're just hunting for the fun. The new deers won't appear and you'll loose your fun eventually. Also the link below - read about the social effect and draw some parallels. You will be surprised to know.
FYI - Tradegy of the commons (while reading you can place the "FUN" as a common resource for the Discovery, just saying)
I feel like I have to reply here!
I was robbed of 10 mil by 3 Lane Hacker pilots while going from Planet Junyo->New Tokyo Jump Gate with helium in cargo
-"Look at it as a investment, you pay 10 mil now and we leave you alone for the next 24 h"
Later that evening while going to New Tokyo from Tau-23:
-"Oh look a Stork transport with 5k niobium on it. We got a VHF and a Outcast gunboat, lets rob it off 10 mil!" (lowered the robing to 8mil with a "cool" conversation)
Not to mention that I was pissed after that.
But well, I was unlucky(what a coincidence) to meet 3 pirates and 2 pirates with a gunboat demanding 10 mil each group.
