What makes you think it's intended that one should be able to power up their engines while they're turned off?
Just imagine doing this against a pirate in a cruiser. Point your trader towards the lane ring behind it, make him type, while he does so, floor it.

Some of you may still be unaware of this simple trick. What does it give you?About 1.5 m/s extra cruise speed(for fighters and bombers). How does it work?
The red lines are continuations of the ship's traces.
The white line is the ship's longitudinal axis.
To get the desired effect, make the imaginary red lines cross at your destination. Simply strafe and move the pointer a bit in opposite direction - and you get a small speed boost.
Cruise strafe, there was a thread about it some time ago.
