Firstly let me say that my time on Disco has been 90% fantastic. Most of you are unbelievably fun, patient and surprizingly mature for a bunch of wacko online gaming addicts like me:)
This is not the rant of a cynic but rather the observation of someone who loves adding value, so as you read this please do no take offense - I give none!
Here goes...
You fiddle around on the internet for months, trying new games, joining guilds and trolling forums when suddenly... *BAM* ...you find the Disco Mod... 'If there was a freelancer 2, this would be it!' you say to yourself and happily dounload the mod while dancing around your PC in your Jocks!
You blindly grope your way around the forums trying to figure out the rules and regulations and then log into the server.
'Hi Everyone:)' you say enthusiastically and *BAM* it begins.
//HEY don't use that smiley face thingy!
//You can't say lol here.
//WHERES YOUR ID! YOU"RE LEVEL 41
and so forth..
So you wonder why someone couldnt have patiently PM'd you... but you continue, all the while thinking to yourself that not everyone here is so impatient and abrupt.
//You should read the forums and join a faction.
Off you go to find a faction on the forums, most of which are extremely intimidating if you are finding your feet in RP... and lo and behold, one of them accepts you.
If you find the wrong faction it's like walking into the 'cool' squad at school, they impatiently belt you for your disco ignorance until you shape up or ship out and have a 'good riddance' attitude if you don't make it...
So you create an interim independant character to figure things out for yourself and mess up here and there...
*BAMM* there it is... someone complains about your ignorance publicly on forums without giving you half a chance to defend yourself in person... nice!
Before you flame me for being 'emo' or sensitive, please realize that this has not happened to me personally, i've merely observed it happening to others. (Edit: it almost happened to me recently but I quit the faction before things could get unpleasant for me and kept my reasons RP).
Its pointless getting angry at players who don't understand RP and treating them with disdain and condescension! You are even guiltier than they because you know better!
Whats my point?
Most who read these posts are the RP lovers, so it's you I am speaking to.
In all your RP and Sirius wisdom never forget how you started!...
Be kind, helpful and patient. And literally go out of your way to mentor players who are willing to learn.
If you don't have time to help, kindly point them to a faction or player that could help them or to a specific section on the forums.
I salute the Angels for their awesome attitude and unbelievable patience!
To those of you who are helpful and patient with others in disco, I thank you!
As I have mentioned somewhere before, I do not play online games to pick up more stress, I come here to spend time with people who have similar interests to me, I come here to relax and most of all I come here to have fun.
In all my years of online gaming, disco is my favourite so far.
Luckily for me I found RepEx first, so from the start this was an amazing experience for me!
I actually think that RepEx or any other trading faction should be a starting point for most newbs, but thats just me...
I don't think the average new player signs up to the forums before they head into the game. I wish they would though.
I reckon we would turn away lots of pvpers if the name of the server was changed to "Discovery Roleplaying Server 24/7". Long, but clearly states what it is.
Sometimes you just see people who are ridiculous, who don't obey the rules nor the roleplaying conventions. Or you see imported clans from other servers, with no RP at all. It really gets tiresome.
Then there's the newbies who want to rp, who are willing to learn and add to the community. I love those players:)
I can remember how it began for me, I was one of the worst RP'ers ever. I won't go into details, but it was messy. I try my best to not beat up on newbies, I know that they don't always know the rules.
Robert, I agree with the sentiment about the newbies who want to learn. I see that at least one of the Asylum 51 people have already joined the forums. Good work, Kane.

Treewyrm Wrote:all in all the conclusion is that disco doesn't need antagonist factions, it doesn't need phantoms, it doesn't need nomads, it doesn't need coalition and it doesn't need many other things, no AIs, the game is hijacked by morons to confuse the game with their dickwaving generic competition games mixed up with troll-of-the-day.
my experience recently has been the opposite. i get berated, called various unmentionables, and threatened by the new people...and some older non-forum goer's.
i am guilty of not directing them as i should and the simple reason for it is that i became tired of most of them responding harshly.
i resolved to ignore the rants and verbally violent PM's while just RP'ing through it.
when i first started here at discovery i was very green and did experience some of what you described, so i tried to treat the new people as i wanted to be treated but alas....it hasn't gone so well.

You have the power to be polite, irregardless of their lack of manners and decency because the 'Law' of discovery is on your side.
The Admins are with you, The RP lovers are with you and the 'Authorities' are with you.
It's not a war between darkness and light that can be won by either side, here the server is RP and all others are guests.
A simple screenshot given to an Admin solves your issues in no time.
I too get a bit irritated sometimes, but a quick chat to another friendlier player ups the game for me again!
It's like real life... when you feel tolerated, chat to someone who makes you feel celebrated!
I try to help people all the time, just recently i helped a few new players get into the roleplay aspect of the game. What really bothers me is the people who log on and you tell them this is an RP server and they go "RP is for noobs" or "Screw roleplay ill do whatever i want"....
Very well said Angelfire.
I have seen examples of much of what youve described. (I spend too much time in New York Im sure.)
Personally Im a horribly slow typist (read hunt and peck) and as a result my responses are often slow in coming. Also when I came to Discovery I thought I knew a little about Role Playing, but the longer I am here the more I realize I am a complete noob. Fortunately those who I have interacted with have, for the most part, been tolerant of my shortcomings and played through it well. On the whole those I have interacted with have been good about staying in RP even when correcting my mistakes.
The longer Im here and the more comfortable I get role playing the more fun Im having.
It might just be time for this Freelancer to think about joining a faction.
