The vast majority of players here know RP by RPG pc/console games, not from the real RPG. Unfortunately those games use an RPG rules ans stats system, but have almost nothing about role-playing.
I started playing GURPS in 1993, and most people that plays D&D, for example, says GURPS is too complex, has too many rules. But they (and most players here in disco) forget about the very first and most important rule of all RPG games: "Each and any rule can be ignored or modified at any time for the benefit of the player's having fun." There are no winners or losers in a RPG session. If the players have fun, everybody wins.
Unfortunately that concept is not applied in disco. You win if the other lose. You win if you gank the hell out of an unarmed transport and stay in the game just so the guy can't continue his cargo run. Even in supposed RP encounters, people go there with clear 'winning conditions', as if following a 'missions list' from a mmorpg.
So, for those who do not know that: if the other guy is not having fun, even if you win you lose. If everybody is having fun, even if you lose you win.

Yes, I was a moderator, yes, I realize that things work a little differently internally now (although not as hugely as some of you might suspect). I'm happy to do the whole krieg leader and faction maintenance thing, but after the NTF getting denied official status, the Consortium getting denied official status, the HF repeatedly having to re-SRP their ships, and the overarching hostile response to Alley's/Huggie's squid roleplay which was the first thing in half a decade that would've changed the nomads, I'll never see the point of any seriously game changing roleplay again unless a vast majority of the dev and admin team agree to it prior, and I think that's pretty sad.
This is a good post, and probably the most accurate.
People RP and care about there RP when they post it. But in general, unless there famous here (I hate to say this but it is true), they will be the only one that cares about there RP.
I would love to try and SRP something cool, but I'm not dumb enough to try.
I would LOVE to fly the Necrosis and play the evil Mon'Star' but I know no matter how much work I tried to do, It would NEVER be approved, or better yet, the Venator is awesome (I play it all the time in LAN SP) Granted those are really extreme examples lol but still..
More realistically, I really wanted to SRP a Corsair gunboat for a junker, but didn't even try. It really does depend on who you are here I think. (Edit: well I did start and try but got nowhere, so gave up trying)
An example like Durandal's.. When I made the Academy of Zoners, I went all out (for me anyway), made a shipyard for giving away free ships, even a news network, detailed info, and everything I could think of to make it good and interesting and pretty much I was the only one that cared. People wouldn't even give me feedback in the feedback thread when I asked a few times. Granted when I made it I didn't know about all the Zoner hate, but still.. It dissuaded me from ever trying again.
Now that's cool, I'm not QQ'ing about it, that's just how it is here I learned (and I was able to sell it for a LOT so it was nice that it was appreciated to that person/group). So I'll Say hi in game, and if someone shows an interest in RP, by RP'ing back, I'll gladly RP, but unless its someone I know will/likes RP, I stick to Greetings, and just RP when its called for (like for my faction or something like that)
I now pretty much play the game because its fun flying around in ships I like and only RP when/if its offered.

The same happened to me only it was with Palladium's RPG system, and not GURPS (and it was about 15-20 years ago)

Pretty much this. The entire lobby, composed of normally respectable people, hop onto their indies and act like a giant bunch of complete idiots.
While I'm sure it's fun - hell, I've been part of it more than once - I don't believe this kind of behavior "fits" on a roleplay server.
And well, in terms of gameplay, it's very much a way for players to have fun at the expense of a lot of other players' fun. That's often exactly what the people on TS are aiming for, however.

Well, rules wise the problem is simple. Most server rules have to be memorized, which in this day and age is utterly unthinkable. In most games like this, rules and limitations are enforced by game mechanics. Something we can't due, since it would require access to game systems we do not have the tools to modify in the first place.
Flhook is not infinite, after all.

Back in the ye olde 90's, Humanity was a superior place, with superior memories, godlike cognitive functionality, with every individual living utopian lives. If you needed to know of something, why m'boy, you found a book instead of Wikipedia. If you happened to be stalking someone, you utilised a telephone directory instead of Farcebook. Require a boner? Act like a personage of dignity, and purchase yourself a magazine as a real man would.(Cynicism).
If your insinuation is that people who were still in the insignificant years of their childhood during the 2003's under which this game was released are too mentally degraded due to stimulations of modernity to remember the Discovery 4.87 server rules, then look at people such as, oh, I have no idea, a significant number of running Discovery faction leaders and role-play contributors.

People change, times change. So does the mod and the playerbase along with the rules and the meaning of RP undertaken by the active playerbase.
Though I am still in support of the kind of RP that was practised here some time ago, I couldnt be the only one enforcing that while I have another option of getting accustomed to the current players than to dwell in the past.
Currently, balance is pretty much disturbed due to a few set of friends and such. Skype, Teamspeak are destroying ways to make the RP in-game spontaneous and unknown till it happens. But this cant be avoided too. As this is a small community we cant expect things to happen as the game proceeds. RP and player encounters are planned before hand so that they dont end up flying all alone.
So, move along and accept on how the community has evolved. The past is nothing but nostalgia and nothing can be done about it as many of the players have left. So, we have to try to teach the new players the ways of playing this mod, which makes the encounters happy and satisfying for both the parties involved.
One thing that I seriously hate here is, some people dont care about RP or other players' fun. I know many (yes,MANY) who are in game all the time, trading OORPly, having multiple BS and Jumpships along with a Barge. The problem is not about their in-game wealth. They dont RP in game, as well as their presence in the forum is negligible. This also includes players who use the forums, just to sell ships and buy ships.
For all those who are like that( I dont want to point out names, as I have been raged over for telling those people that they can do a lot more in the forums and in game instead of just buying all the ships and earning cash that doesnt fit in even 10 characters), this is not RL, and the money you earn is just pixel money. Dont be under the false impression that FL money=RL money. Instead interact with the community and get yourself some friends. Afterall getting to know a lot of people and managing to have fun with people who you cant meet in RL is what that sets MMORPGs apart from other games.
I watched one of Spazzy's videos yesterday and he actually raised an excellent point. When new players are un docking from Planet Erie for the first time they see a Battleship. Now as he said in the video, the new player will look at the Battleship and think. "I want one of those". They will go out of their way to get the money not even knowing what RP is. They will think. 'Big guns, big ship, I'm the winner' now.. You can do various things to stop this because as for me I've seen countless new people flying Corsair Legates etc. They shoot you on site.. It's annoying since there is no RP and the fact that they were able to get their hands on the ship.
Maybe a few opinions on this?
I thought up some small points how to help resolve this:
1. Move the Battleship from Erie orbit.
2. (This one is more extreme) Only allow Official factions to have Battleships/Cruisers. This will also hit hard on the people that RP without being in a faction so I'd probably rule it out.
3. Well.. Im not sure, feedback?
