Some time ago when the max. player hack was made (1month ago I guess), there was a poll about increasing/not increasing the number of players. Most said yes.... but most people also expressed concerns about stability/lag.
It looked to me that consensus was to increase and see how it works out.
My experience is that there is usually no big lag under 150 players... but it gets laggy very fast over that number. Virtually twice the lag with every 5 extra players.
I'm of the opinion that the limit should therefore be set to 150.

Before we all go off and speculate about what controls what piece of software, and how many players it
was designed for in the first place ... Lets just say, most of it has been re-written, and the old piece is
not running the server anymore ... That task has fallen to another utility.
Current stability problems are from other less savory sources unfortunately.
If we drop the limit again, we will hear the whining of not being able to get on the server, emanating from
these 'ere forums ...
Little lag now and again, or no play at all ? You choose ...

I have to agree with the points of Hoodlums post I comprehend, if the server limit is dropped these forums will erupt once more, we regularly have 170+ players on now and dropping it below that is going to make competition for places increase again, events get postponed and discovery's forums light up to the sound of people posting about not being able to get to the event and worse posts still.
It must be said I experience no lag whatsoever unless I'm running a call on Skype, TS and my internet browser all at the same time as FL, shutting one down normally fixes it. So I may not be able to emapthise as well as I'd like to. However perhaps checking what background processes might be eating your bandwith could help you with the lag problems.

I'm not sure though.
I've modified and compiled a special Hook version that can handle up to 200 players, as per the hook creators and other admins' guidelines. The hook is not the problem here.

Then we deal with them like we do all other whiners. Tell them to shut up and color.
Why are you reading this? Don't you have something else you'd rather be doing? Why are you still reading this? Go out and explore, trade, fight, pirate, or even die thanks to SLRC autopilot. You're still here? What do you want, a poem? Fine. Roses are red, violets are blue, I lose the game, and so did you.
I lowered the server load limit that prevents NPC spamming as I think a lot of people could have problems when they come to an area with lots of NPCs as the server needs to send much more data to the clients.
I must say I noticed that some players in the Eta fights lagged quite a lot (while NPCs were not lagging to me) so I think it's not related to the server HW (CPU currently runs at 4,3GHz).
I fear one thing if we decide to lower the limit, server tends to crash more when all the player slots fill up and new players are flooding it with new login requests.
Let's wait for a while and I'll start a different poll to discover if more people have lag problems once the amount of players reaches over 150.

Well indeed it could be a serious problem, I know it from my own expirience, I'm a server administrator of the server (no combined with FL, the other game) and when I look at server console during a day peak it's spammed by login requests like hell, and that couse a serious lag, bealive me.
I would wait some time with 200 and maybe you will find some solution to fix it a little. If not maybe 170 would be a good limit.
and btw majkp what with death messages? is it gonna be fixed?
