Or anyone else willing to undertake a daunting and thankless task (well, I'd thank you anyways).
I was browsing google images for various things to use as tbar/signature stock and came across this beautiful picture:
and an old ship modelling discussion from 4.84-ish popped back into my head. See those cargo containers on the nearer ship, and the lack of cargo containers on the far ship?
We have a few vanilla craft that can do exactly that. There are ships in the game that you can equip with custom cargo pods. Not many people use them anymore because they're crap compared to the mod's newer and sexier ships, so why not remedy that by adding a new and sexy ship that... uses cargo pods? Hell, why not add some new and sexy cargo pods too?
Oh boo hoo, shouldnt have pirates using military grade antimatter cannons on civilian ships anyhow if you want to apply any kind of logic to it. What good is blowing up that transport if you're not actually going to get anything out of it? demand cargo or gtfo.

Ehm, Advanced Train is pretty good. Though I had discussion about this years ago - devs decided to not use the cargopods on new ships and keep everything in "one piece", but it was a fetish of Igiss, as I recall. Nothing is changed tho.
@tena: can be done - but it can also create problems for balancing. pods are meant to be cosmetic, not tactical. if we wanted ablative armor to attach to ships - we would do it ... it is not hard.
we would also kind of be bound to vanilla shapes and sizes - which limits shipdesigns. because the players simply fail to restrain themselves ( as seen with pimplights ) - they cannot resist to put stuff that is clearly not intended for certain ships ... on those anyway ( large green strobes on tiny little ships )
so if we made custom cargopods or very different designs - ppl would end up using them on ships and hardpoints they do not fit - unless we create restrictive hardpoints - aaaand then things become more complicated again.
so in short - can it be done? easily ... but in general a transport without those is preferable - or a transport where the cargopods are such a small element that they do not matter much ( rheinland battletransport - although the pods are wrong on that ship - they were meant to be vertially and a bit diagonal instead of horizontal )
How about to make an "empty" transport, and when you fill it the cargos would apear? I mean not to mount them, just apear there like an animation or something and you can pass "through" them. Can it be done this way maybe?
