Edit:
M stands for Mega.
It looks like that it would stand for mega... something. Then K would stay for mega-something and K is given to the additional number to not to spam with 100000s and so on.
That's why M aren't meters and K are just thousands (to short down numbers)
1K = 1000
10K = 10000
100K = 100000
1000K = would be 1000000
Whatever unit is that, definetly it's not meters. As I wrote already, I'd search for answers around Light Seconds and Light Minutes - but this doesn't also meet, as 1AU equals 8 Light Minutes.

Yep, K is just for thousands. But it WILL grind me what M stands for.
As Shizune said, Jumpdrives, Cloaking and such things aswell as Warp Gates already existed way before, in Starlancer. Some ships were even able to open a wormhole for a couple of secs for long distance jumps. Jumpdrives were already build inside the ships system, something like the current mk2 Jumpdrive which yoi can only jump 2 systems away from you.
For those who dont know, the Alliance vs coalition war you saw on FL intro was Starlancer, well Starlancer takes role even before the intro.
