Looked at this server for a while before I dived in and glad I did. Very warm welcome from 2 other players, Antares who directed me here to this forum and Rene who set me the right path to mining.
Thanks for the help guys.
Hop in on European evenings and look out for "IMG|" vessels. Mainly in T23 or sometimes O7. I bet we can show you a thing or two about mining, like good loadouts, etc. If you can imagine going for IMG, read this. It contains a lot of advice on how to play the game and what to expect. Mining loadouts and advice on which ship to get is also there. http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=89590
If you really want to play Disco, you need: Skype, and Teamspeak. This way, you'll learn the game 10 times as fast.
BMM would be delighted to have new players. We have a bunch of angels myself being one of them who would be able to help you out with things other than mining. We are also working closely with the most active trading faction which gets us a lot of business and convoys.

a good place to start would be the helium fields in pennsylvania, get yourself a transport, and behind planet erie there should be a blue nebula, go into the centre and start mining, its safe and fast for new players, sell the helium on planet erie and once you get 22 mil, make a bmm char, move the cash with /givecash {bmm charname} {ammount} (make sure to spell your name right, so you dont give your $$$ to another player! and buy a hegemon on new london, then go to dublin and head to greaves, then you should see a POB behind greaves, fly to it (dont shoot it even once) and begin to mine gold there, sell that gold on planet new berlin, and boom, youll be making cash fast!
this is a quick summary, there a bit more detail in this, but im not bothered to write full detail!
Take a look at this Base in Texas and our faction,
and join in as an indie scrapper or faction member if you like.
Fact is, there are a lots of opportunities to play a miner :
Pick one with a background and / or supportive group you´d like to roleplay,
or look around and choose an opportunity for max profit.
Some like to mine / trade for fun, others take it as a necessary chore they have to do to pick up the cash they need to buy capital ships. Many miners work as freelance miners, some only work in faction, and others again prefer to pirate & mine at the same time. And mining is not the only way to make money fast.
Wow very impressed by the warm responses and the ton of advice. I need to do some serious study looking into all this info. I shall respond to each addressee once I have taken all this info in.

Thanks again all
Sorry for the avalanche of info, indeed it does take a bit to read through all of it, but with tht knowledge, it's somewhat easier to get started Also, all the factions representng themselves above are good to start and they can probably hook you up with a starting gear
