Currently rereading Asimov's Foundation. When I first read it I was way younger and only a sci-fi fan, thus only the sci-fi stuff caught my attention. Now that I'm older, I'm also paying attention to the politics in it, and it's beautiful.

It's a hardboiled detective series. With werewolves, zombies, and vampires. It's not exactly broadening any intellectual horizons, but it's damned good fun. Come on, someone rides a T-Rex through Chicago. If that doesn't sound just a little bit cool to you, then you're not a human being. After that, it'll be straight on to my more usual sci-fi fare with Nemesis Games.
Tau Zero's fairly interesting in that regard as well. The Lost Fleet series is a little softer, but still moderately realistic, save a exceptions to allow FTL travel, and is a great read if you're into military sci-fi.

By older authors i would suggest A.C. Clarke or Stanislaw Lem (e.g. Solaris), by newer i can recommend almost all short stories by Greg Egan and my favorite novel of past few years, Blindsight by Peter Watts.
