Hyuns eyes gleamed back as the two replied to him. He took the invitation and began scouring over the ship. As he went around looking at it he paused momentarily at the engine compartment and looked at the reactor. "How in the world did you fit that in there?" he asked as he went about the dimensions in his mind. Not waiting for a response he continued. "Its small, agile and you can definitely tell that most of the plating is new. It's missing its thruster manifold though otherwise it looks runable." He pauses for a brief moment to take a short breath. "so whats the hold up?" He asks expectantly as he plops down on the bench they were standing next to.
"Yeah, well, this thing's a bit more delicate than I wanted 'er ta be, yeah? We were just discussing engine work and how I seem ta be at a dead end as far as utilizing tha full output.
If it could burn tha power as fast as I could feed it in, tha wee bugger'd be faster than an Arrow. Only thing I ever saw eat tha much juice is a CD, and those missile bodies burn out after, wha, 5 seconds?. You'd need somethin a lot more hardy than tha to sustain tha level of thrust."
Christo's hand came up and he took a slug from a bottle of whiskey it hadn't seemed he'd been carrying before.
"Have you thought about Gadolinium yet? Hyun asks as he stares aimlessly at the engine compartment. He seems to be lost in thought as he scrambles for a piece of paper and starts drawing on it. He glances over at the thruster. He tinkers with it a little; grabs some tools measures carbon deposits and wear on the manifold. "There seems to be a few ways to go about this, it might get a little pricey and we would have to run quite a few tests to make sure it would work but theoretically it could work." He mumbles under his breath as he is working. "What were your ideas on over coming the heat problem?" He asked realizing they might have already come up with some solutions
"I like your enthusiasm, mate, but one oh tha other points here is ta make this a reproducible process. I might prolly cob together a one off solution ta this, but we need somethin tha can be handed off ta a manfacturer, yeah?
Now, you're takin me a might too literal. It's nae so much a matter of heat management as a matter of utilizing tha energy that tha plant produces. Wha I meant about burnout is tha I canna feed 8.5k oh energy inta tha existin motor. Tha's where I'm boggin down.
Ain't no one's made one oh these in a long while, an, while I can cram a Stargazer power plant into tha space, I canna cram tha motor in wit it. Even if we could, runnin one of those beasts up ta full power would rip it out oh the mountings, regardless oh tha reinforcing we already put in.
Tha's why I was day dreamin about CD engines. It'd do a better job oh balancing power usage, thrust, and vector."
Hyun peered into the wall infront of him seemingly mesmerized by the molecular structure it portrayed."So then all we need to do is build an engine that can use and manipulate the power better yes?" He stated returning from his stupor. "And you could pass the Gadolinium Thruster design off to a Galic manufacturer. Seen as how we are pretty neutral they should be willing if the credits are good." He stated. "On the topic of making a new engine what about a Helium3 Lazer engine then the truster could be as simple as a Heat resistant focus manifold. I have an idea in mind if your willing to give me some time to come up with a model." He said a little reserved and then returned to his page.
"Hmm, Gadolinium... That's a wee bit soft for a thruster body. Maybe add some Iridium ta tha mix ta harden it up.
Nae sure what ya mean by a laser engine, but I'm willin ta listen ta anything serious.
As for tha Gallics, neutral ain't exactly tha same as friendly. We might maybe be better talkin ta Daumann for political reasons. I know they have Iridium, an I'm fair certain they have Gadolinium, too."
Christo turned and looked at Sunny.
"Wouldna hurt ta get a wee bit oh good press in Strudelville, yeah?"
Sunny had been listening, scratching his chin in thought as the ideas bounced off of both Christo and Hyun. He thought for a while, noticing Chriso's suggestion and nods slowly. "They seem to be a bit busy as of late... Daumann that is..." He quickly from under his jacket takes out a small data pad and turns in on. "Yeah..." He swears a little under his breath. "They seem to be a bit busy... though I can try contacting them anyway. Perhaps even ALG if that doesn't work. We could ask them to refine the raw materials anyway to make the best mixture. We don't really have the right tools for that around here anyway." He shrugs. "Wouldn't hurt.... though we'd first try for a sample to see how it would go. Just enough to make one engine or two... And hell... you guys think you alone could make a custom engine from scratch? Seems a bit far-fetched."
"Well, a thruster body'd just be casting work. Tha lathe can do tha, though I've nae seen anythin like tha mix we're talkin about, so there might be a wee bit oh problem there.
For tha rest oh it, I donna know. We don't have tha facilities for makin a lot oh the parts tha go inta tha kind oh hardware, certainly nae somethin like lazin for a fusion process.
Mayhaps, if we can get one oh the big boys ta listen, someone with a yard?"
Christo nods at Hyun, then turns back to Sunny and continues.
"We could try getting tha Gad from Gallia, import tha Iri from Rheinland and run tha process through either IMG or, if you're still interested, those Froggy buggers we partied with a while back. Weren't they flying their own brand oh birds?"
"Hmmm..." Sunny thinks to himself, thinking on the options...
"The 'Froggies' ... don't know about that... I'd much rather prefer IMG to process it and perhaps come up with a good mixture of the two. Hell.. maybe they can ever come up with the materials themselves if we give them a good price for it all.... If not..." he shrugs "we can get them some way or another... only problem for me is building and putting it all together..."
He thinks for a little longer.
"You do remember though... we got a lot of premium scrap in storage. Might be something there that could work as parts. you never know what you can find. It wouldn't be perfect but could do for tests that we could do..."
He nods a little more.
"I'd say... we can contact IMG for this... and I'm sure they got a yard as well. We could ask to rent some space perhaps. I could even ask Julia for a little favor." He chuckles a little.
Hyun is besides himself as the two talk already lost in thought as to the new design. A lazer engine huh... he thought to himself. Now that's going to take some doing. Weather the other two addressed him or not he couldn't hear them. He mumbled his way out of the room scratching designs on his pad. He made his way to a private sweet on new port he had started renting for his own personal use. Paper after paper filled the floor as his designs improved. He finally settled on one and fired up a holographic console as he began to build a digital prototype for the engine.
