I know this is a controversial topic. I'm making not for the sake of trolling, inciting flames, or insulting the users of such characters unlike what other threads have done recently. I want to have a discussion where I'm asking a genuine question to the people behind Furry characters, and for the community to gain insight and perhaps ultimately us arriving at a solution.
So, people who roleplay furry characters. Why do you do it? I'm genuinely interested. Why is that you absolutely must have a character with fur on their skin and ears of some animal nature? Why are you unable to roleplay a human character like other discovery members?
Perhaps it is because you want your fandom, your cultural views, represented in the roleplay enviroment? If that is the case, then I find that strange. Users are not allowed to fully express their cultural views, as indicated by rule 1. Perhaps that is grasping at straws since the furry fandom on it's own isn't bad in itself, then again as a cultural view it is frowned upon by the majority of the community. As many other cultural views would be, which are prohibited.
In many cases I feel that a lot of 'furry roleplay' seems to be very desperate attempts to make the furry fandom itself disco canon. A long time ago, I was approached by a user (who I won't be naming) who asked if I would be willing to partake in roleplay where I would use Core to partake in roleplay with the user that would RP crazy experiments that would turn a human character into a furry animal/human hybrid. I declined because I personally am not a fan of the furry fandom and wouldn't want a hand in creating more (although I did offer constructive advice as to what other places they could look to for creating their character if they really wanted to). At the same time, I feel this would be akin to me doing some science RP where I forcefully turn a white character black or a black character white, because that is part of my heritage. It is something I personally relate to. Undeniably that would be considered really weird and even slightly creepy.
Currently we have the rule 2.4 which is "Ponies off the reservation will be removed without warning". This is to counter the brony fandom, and any attempts to have Pony characters in the roleplay enviroment. I'm sure people would cringe at the sight of [LN]-Twilight.Sparkle.
And that's the big issue. It's a problem for both the people roleplaying these characters and the people roleplaying with these characters. The cringe. Or, to better define it, the ridicule and unwillingness to seriously roleplay with such characters. Somtimes I cry a tear for people who RP Furries. There are characters out there who in themselves are pretty cool and have interesting backgrounds, history and RP. Yet, they're tainted by the somewhat random desire of the player to make them a furry. And when such characters are RP'd with other players, it creates many awkward scenarios. People don't treat the furry characteristic as inRP, which immediately creates a disconnect between the two players RPing those characters and the owner of the character and the character itself. It then often leads to ridicule scenarios, where the furry character is hounded (baddum-tsst) by the rest of the community either in comms (i.e go back to the zoo!) or people just hunt them mercilessly due to that one characteristic. Or as I said people just ignore the characters entirely, which creates awkward scenarios.
In this post I'm not necessarily asking if we should create a new rule like rule 2.4 for the furry fandom (or should we?), nor am I saying I hate people who RP furries (peope =/= their characters), nor am I necessarily asking the community to accept the fandom itself.
Rather I am curious what drives these people to roleplay such characters in such a way, how they're able to make it past the tides of incoming harassment and ridicule, as well as what makes them think that such characters are or deserve to be recognised in the RP enviroment and canon. And in the case of the latter, what other RP do we allow if we allow Furries? Should we allow Sonic the Hedgehog RP too?
At the end of the day the question is ladies and gentlemen: what is sensible character roleplay? I hope both sides of the fence can answer that question.
It's sort of powergaming because these people want to force their characters that doesn't fit Sirius atmosphere to be accepted. Discovery removed Apes' easter egg for a reason.

They were actually cool though ngl Q.Q
Primus itself from what I read had cool RP. But yeah I see your point tbh. They were heavily disconnected from the rest of Sirius and mod RP. And for an alien race barely anyone reacted to their presence (people would normally freak out over a new alien race).

lyth lets be real. Only reason ppl rp furries is cuz it is a fetish .
Like... Plis
Frankly, I really do not care if people are into furries, part of the furry fandom or anything related to it. What I don't like is them a) enforcing their RP (which is not part of FL lore, btw) on me by confronting me with characters that break my immersion and b) victimize themselves intentionally by creating furry characters and then become salty when they catch flak for it.
There is no need for talking animals in the Discovery Universe let alone animals flying or commanding space ship's. That's why i ignore furry or any other animal characters both in game and at the forum's as much as i can.
But tbh. It's almost the same problem with the 13 years old anime captains. I like anime and stuff. But i just like to interact with more realistic characters in the Freelancer universe.
Amount of threads regarding this topic is becoming ridiculous.
Server has problems with silent powertraders, bluehungry /l1, /l2 pvpers, people preying on newbies, 2milordai pirates, community is full of people who loves trolling and flaming and treating each other like a dirt, broken economy, capspam...and the list may go long and long.
And what is the most discussed and repeatedly reopened topic all around including wall of texts and trolling in flood? Furry characters, which are used by like five players (maybe even less) and are visible only because of one of them which has few alts and is quite active on forums.
Seriously guys, if you want to discuss something and write walls of text, what don´t you choose some REAL problem which the community/server has?
