Roleplay story wordcount doesn't have much to do with the quality of the roleplay.
A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.
Quote: This is a pretty serious intervention into characters with tonnes of roleplay done, invalidating long hours spent on thinking our things and even more hours spent on roleplaying. Changes so fundamental it would require creation of characters from very basis, completely anew - because retconned characters will not be the same characters initially created.
toris, more or less you already retconned your character using an alt for those who didn't accepted non-human characters(as in other than 3-4 peoples who plays furrys in the community ),just delete your posts on your other 3-4 alts you used to rp the character as a furry and not a human(or atleast not specifying was not a human)
so..it seems to me that your work is almost done before enforcing the rule publicly, but being honest and all that,,,what did you expect will happen when decided to play a furry ?so don't start complain now because of the expected consequences of your actions
@SMI-Great.Fox
you only need to replace 3 transmission bars from last year,i don't see much to be needed in your case either..
People want to believe that God has a plan for them.
They don't wanna believe that anyone else does..
Discovery is a community dedicated to roleplaying imaginary fantasy characters. Members of this community gather large amounts of happiness and enjoyment when roleplaying their individual character. These are characters who have often been meticulously crafted, and even if we're too proud to admit it, a lot of us have personal connections with the characters we create. While there are extreme cases, I think it is fairly dangerous to tell someone their character's story or interaction is better or worse than another person's, considering we're mainly here for our own enjoyment and this really only amounts to bullying. So there is a significant harm to an individual in censoring their character.
However, I do understand Discovery is a roleplaying server which means that we are interacting with other people. If there are characters whose roleplay consistently decreases the enjoyment of other players, then those characters should not exist. However, if the roleplay is consistent with discovery's interfactional politics, and the material referenced on the server is relatable and understandable, then we shouldn't be destroying the enjoyment of community members by censoring characters simply because they have backgrounds and roleplay that exists beyond the current discovery universe. There have been incidences where expansions of the discovery universe by individuals has been constructive, like the consortium, and many enjoyable roleplaying sessions came out of some community members extensive imagination. Besides, discovery has been importing characters and stories from other universes its whole life.
So do these characters significantly and consistently decrease the enjoyment of all players that interact with them because their RP involves things that nobody knows about, completely disregards the rest of sirius, or is just generally difficult to interact with? And do these characters keep you up at night so much that it warrants destroying a community member's hard work and happiness?
On another note, There was also a comment about someone who's background wasn't good enough and therefore they clearly aren't a good community member and aren't dedicated to RP. That's just ridiculous. For me, along with a lot of other community members, I can't be bothered to write pages upon pages of backstory because I find that boring and tedious, and my personal enjoyment from discovery comes from RP interaction with other players, which I like to think is comprehensive. I should be able to exercise this right to do what I enjoy most, and not be forced by the community into doing something I don't like if it's not directly harming the enjoyment of other community members.
In the future where the limits of technology are boundless, I know a lot of people who would opt to have animal features and maybe even create some weird whacky hybrid. We can have imaginary fantasy robots and imaginary fantasy ailens but not imaginary fantasy human cross animal things. Some imaginary fantasy characters are okay, and some are not okay. Realistically, I don't know why we can't evaluate which characters directly harm other people's enjoyment on the server and which don't on an individual basis.
I will be present in-game time and post in roleplay sections, but this is how my activity on Discovery ends. Why, you ask? With this decision, it is not only lack of will to create anything - it is also the utter toxicity of the community put into extremes.
You asked me and Bret to "simply change the character's picture." This is not how it works. This is not how any of these work. The most fatal issue is that a lot of roleplay would be going to be retconned. And I mean it. Ask @"SirDoge" and @Wellingtons how much roleplay they had put into doing things out with me - it was not only initiative of mine, mind you. Not to mention several other players which actually enjoyed such a roleplay idea of human-animal hybrid with actually something more than "just because it looks cool" background.
Problem with Cody is not 'duh, you can just change the avatar'. Human Cody will not be the very same Cody created previously. It means a lot of changes, a lot of stance and behaviourism changes - it is easier to create whole character a new than to do a lot of retconning to already existing character.
For me, both possibilities is throwing my efforts into dustbin.
This said, now just imagine how Bret feels right now. After all these years, invalidating his roleplay. And if I am disappointed after putting not even a month of efforts into roleplay, now imagine how Bret feels. How I am supposed to roleplay after all that? I feel angered and responsible for the fact that Bret's roleplay went into void.
But, there is one point you are all missing. It's not about furries, as I already stated. It is about gained disappointment and loss of time and effort dedicated to the character creation, brainstorming and fitting all pieces of the puzzle into place. It's not about lack of adaptation. It's about time and efforts wasted, but also about the community, which is "haha, you were put in place stupid Toris". You put more acid into already toxic community, hating on players for silly mistakes and "git gud" state of mind.
This is not the place I hoped to roleplay in.
Sincerely but not without disappointment,
Toris James Gray
Retconning is painful and disappointing. I felt it with my nomad infestee a year ago.
I can only suggest killing a character and starting a new one from the scratch, because re-working personality (any part of personality) ruins the character entirely.
Come on Toris, all I see from you is how it's not that easy to just remove ears and fur and dogface, but removing the furry aspect would alter characters big time, yet I still haven't seen any explainations to support your claims.
Like there is the tl;dr version of Cody, "Rheinlander suffering terminal illness joins shady experiment concluded by two madmen well-versed in biotech, with his conciousness being copied onto silicon chip and implanted into artificially engineered hybrid.", what if I tell you that silicon chip can't only be implanted into a hybrid but also a normal human clone (requires a lot less work, can look pmuch the same as original if genome is secured and intact), or an android?
