Hi guys,

so, interestingly enough, it seems that I might have a different definition of metagame thinking. So, some background:

I am a 20 year veteran of table top RPGs like D&D and Pathfinder. Most of that time was spent as a very lenient DM (dungeon master). We've learned to see metagame thinking as information that is gleaned by remembering that this is a game. I'll quote the rule book, which makes everything so clear.

Quote:"I'll figure there'll be a lever on the other side of the pit that deactivates the trap," a player says to the others, "because the DM would never create a trap that we wouldn't deactivate somehow." That's an example of metagame thinking. Any time a player bases their characters' actions on logic that depends on the fact that they 're playing a game, thery're using metagame thinking.

However, for us table toppers, any information that is known through legitimate & explainable interactions with NPCs is totally acceptable (and very encouraged). Now, for the meat of the post:

How much can we rely on NPCs for information, as long as a good role play is done to explain the NPCs knowledge?

Does all role play require an opposing PC?

What kind of connections can our PCs have to NPCs in power?

I ask this, mostly because this is a universe where there are millions of NPCs and only a handful of PCs to interact with.

Finally, would the angels like to take some time to look at my two characters' logs:

Sorrontis: Here

Balados: Here

And tell me if I go to far. Balados is a happy go lucky person, so there's not much there that's hidden. However, Sorrontis has a full past that's not yet disclosed. I can send you a copy by PM so you can look through that too.

Thanks Angels!

Good bye my friends. Good luck in space. Fly safe.

NPCs in disco are basically void fillers. You can use them in RP like.. emm.. lemme think real quick.
Right. When someone for example is shooting NPCs that are allies to you, then you can shoot said player provided you RPd a warning and after this an engagement notice.
But when its about information, you are mostly limited to bar rumors, bar news and things the NPCs 'say' ingame, but nothing beside that, because, again, they are void fillers.

Real actual roleplay information is obtained through players. Through interaction, and that which is already available to your faction (that doesnt mean you have access to faction comms contents and the likes).

Metagaming here, is that if you use any information your character -should not- have access too against other players. Such as if the Order were to make a RP post against the Blood Dragons that they are assembling a secret fleet at Nagano, and my KNF char all of a sudden knows about this.

I hope this answers your question a bit,

~ Thomas

This Galaxy is vast; its wonders and beauty are almost unfathomable. But the galaxy also hides dark secrets, some of which have lain dormant since the beginning of time itself. There is a danger in secrets, both in seeking and in knowing. Some things are meant to be hidden from view. Some mysteries defy understanding, and sometimes even the things we think we know are untrue. Some secrets should remain untouched.

You can use the NPC as @"Caelumaresh" says freely and within the limit of reasonable RP indeed. Also i would like to give you this simple and clear clarification for meta-gaming.
Meta-gaming is simply, when someone move information from a character to another OUTSIDE of role play and use it in role play.
It will make no sense and it will ruin the server. So many didn't get it and got banned from here because of it - Good luck and your character biographies are nice Smile keep going mate

The two posts above are a good indication of what constitutes the problem on Discovery.

Great, that settles my mind. I'll just have to ignore my natural urges and rely on more people. Truly different, but this is a fun place Big Grin
