I write stories because I like to. None of my characters are really that unique- well, okay, having a Nomad inhabit you isn't exactly normal, but it isn't something unique within Sirius. They may have histories and motives that I flesh out on the forums, but they exist in the game, and how I play them in the game determines how I write the stories. I have no reason to create a "justification story" because I have nothing to justify. My Bundschuh is a Bundschuh. He flies with their tag and ID, and flies the closest thing they have to a faction ship (Hessian line), which is reinforced, not justified, by the fact he used to work for the Hessians and even helped test the Asgard fighter series. My freelancer is a free spirit. She flies an Eagle, with civilian weapons because she doesn't want others to judge her before they know her. She embodies a person unencumbered with faction loyalties- a true freelancer. The stories behind her (when I get around to writing them) will explain her less than positive reputation with Samura's pawns, and why the Golden Chrysanthemums just happen to be in the area to fight them off when things get rough. Being hated by the Hogosha and the Farmer's Alliance was something I worked at, and it adds something to the character, even if it is at my expense.
The stories follow the character, not the other way around.
' Wrote:What's the point in creating and developing a character if no one is willing to accept it?
Most things are acceptable, within boundaries.
The problem is, everyone wants to play the superhero or supervillain, nobody wants to be the 'normal' person in Sirius.
That's one reason the LPI, xenos, etc. have their RP viewed as so much better than others. They are 'normal', they RP their flaws as much, if not more than, their strengths. Too many people here try to create characters that are without flaws, and that makes for a very lacking personality and background.
Everyone has flaws, if you dont include them in your character's RP you're only taking away from his or her potential.

(Sorry--couldn't help it.)
It refrains from taunting, or it gets the whip again!
I'll admit, even my characters' flaws arent well enough portrayed in their backgrounds and stories, but I still try at least. Captain of the tenacity is a leftover from the mining war - that adds both strengths and weaknesses, most of his crewmembers have troubled pasts - an ex lane hacker kicked out of the organization for being too soft, a trigger happy merc who doesnt think before shooting, the engineer used to be a slave girl at a junkyard, etc.
So what the point in creating a character and developing it ? To develop your character one must play. No one stop you to exist in game, but some "rules" can stop you to have what your character wants.
I like to give just an example of what I consider for myself role-playing a character:
I made an expedition with a character to establish contact with the Order. I made it in game. After this contact, I ask to the leader of Bs the permission to docked on Toledo... yes... only the permission to dock on Toledo, it does not include buying weapon, going in O100 or docking on the Isis.
Other example: i wrote on the outcast message dump to say that i was interested by a Inferno. I do not expect an answer, i just said, "i will come to find a contact". I came to Malta to meet some Outcasts and i have still not purchase the weapon. How can i do that as i do not even know where is the gun dealer ? After a nice chat, i was convinced of the risk of mounting such an evident proof of my friendship with outcasts.
Should i purchase an Inferno ? No because, none outcasts i met was friendly enough with me to encourage me in such a path. Conclusion : no one will sell me an Inferno unless i deal with an outcast character.
I do not write stories because i can't do it properly. Justifying what we have by what we do in game is far better. Quoting Sovereign: the stories follow the character, not the other way around.
The pilot is not the ship. We are role-playing characters, not ship and guns. They are just instruments, they reflect our In Game development (money, contacts etc..).
Roleplaying is about acting not writting. Have you ever seen an actor playing a role on a paper ? No, he plays on a stage or in a movie.
Being ooRP is only being out of the server RP rules (written or not). I really do not see where the ability to role-play a character is related to the use of a ship and guns. ooRP mean nothing and writing a story to avoid the ooRP rules means nothing. Role-playing is about live interaction, tell we where is the interaction is by writing a justification story ? "Justification stories" are just hypocrit justifications to avoid RP actions. There is absolutely no RP in it.
However, I do respect writers who write a story for the story itself and for the pleasure of his readers. To write is a beautiful act of creation.
"Perfection, honesty, devotion" "Immortality is our subconscious main concern" "To change the system, you have to be inside the system and play by the rules"

I absolutely agree with this statement, however I find it a lot easier to be in character if I have something concrete and writen for me to relate my actions to. Certain roleplay stories and characters are almost imposible to explain without a well writen story, take the Fantasmas de le Nube Sinestra. Thanks to Zapp and some mystery man (or woman), the chracters have (rather ironically) come to life in my eyes, and in game they are exactly what they should be. However without the writen material on this forum they would be essentialy meaningless. Its only becuase I know the characters that I enjoy seeing them around the server so much.

Veering away from the "play" parallel, the unique thing about role playing games is that there is not a defined written scrip to be performed by the actors. The real funny aspect of playing these games is that you don't simply memorize lines and barf them mindlessly in stage (not that real actors do only that), you have an idea of who your character is and then you have to improvise, because you don't know what the other actor is going to do and vice-versa. You have to be prepared to do so and, more importantly, to be able to react to the unexpected.
You can't build your character around preconceptions of how the other characters should react to it. You have control only of yourself. The responsibility of portraying your character in enough depth that the others have enough information to really understand what yours is about is yours alone. Maybe the other guy is playing someone with an ill intent, some jerk, someone corrupt, you never really know. The only thing you've got to base your play in is reactions. The time you start interpreting someone else's role for them, you have left yours unattended.
Why don't we just write a rule that allows faction weapons only to faction players... (looking at the beginning of the topic)
Independants could be allowed more weapons, let's say some civilian ones and one prefered faction weapons... I have to agree with H
It's really silly to see an order - zoner juggranout, armed with nomad, gmg and cerebrus turrets...

Dammit, Jure, I can't think of anyone who would be unhappy about this dying. I'm not going to humor you by responding to your point. Just know that next version a lot more factionalized stuff will be in, and there won't be as much questionable stuff going around.
