What is laughable is people going all out for second chances, almost white knight level, but only for the people they actually think deserve one.
What about GamerGirl, Alhimik, Snakelancer, Sava, Burak, Exodite, Hone, Lyth, Makc or many others. Oh wait.
Maybe the punishment for so many different scope of offenses should be revisited then.
Cause laz did not effectively embargo or cripple the server for a month. To compare them all as the same is nonsense.

I think it's more about the intent of their actions.
He INTENDED to go out of his way to grief. That's just as bad. We don't need people with that kind of attitude around, really.
People have done the same or worse and those are still or again able to play the game. Either by circumventing their ban or by getting unbanned at some point. Eventually this'll be the case for some mentioned above some day too, or not. There's never really been any consistency on who stays banned.

Then it falls back to the question. Is a first offence the determinator that hes stuck that way?
To this day I cannot be sure on so many accounts like this and unlike this.
I mean we didn't send him to prison we sent him home. the evidence he misses the place the community we all value is his appeal. was it THAT BAD?
We won't ever know. but still think the price of a second go around is so small in this instance to make sure of it that i've never shorted anyone that much.
The equation is very simple if hes a griefer he will always grief. if that was his true motivation the first time.
Punishing people was already proven as touchy business. Only temp-banned players are punished ones, as expected effect of punishing is making someone better. So... Temp-banned ones behave nice after return and then just a fact they were banned gives them strong community pressure. It pulls them down to new levels of whatever they were doing bad (also known as ex-convict syndrome). I mean, how many people can really change just to stay in some game?
Perma-ban is not a punishment, but more an example. It's a method of removing ones to make others stay. Not all "others" are nice people, so people we remove are not always evil. That kind of example can be confusing and of low effect.
Talking to people that "can't fit in a box" is most effective, imho. Knowing their needs and then finding them something to do. Is it easy? No. I guess that'd be a reason almost no one is doing it. We are all here to play our game.
We ban because people are trolls. We ban like a surgeon cuts off cancerous tissue.
All this subject, imho, can be summed up by one quote from the first page:
