Well, yesterday I dusted off my repair ship and asked me, why are there not more of them? After some minutes I realized: they are boring as f... f... fidget spinners! Very boring. So I thought about them and kind of found a way for myself to make them more interesting.
I have suggestions for three new ships and two new upgrades:
1. Small Repair Ship:
This could be the current ship, no changes except for 4 gb turrets instead of 3 transport turrets (they are useless).
2. Medium Repair Ship:
This one have 8 gb turrets, twice the hull strength and core power, balanced cargo/bots/bats/remaining stuff. Also twice as big as the small one. The nanotool slot stay at one.
3. Large Repair Ship:
This could have something like 6 or 8 cruiser turrets, two nanotool slots, 3x the core of the Small one, 3x the hull of the small one and the size of the Donau or whatever. The rest is balanced.
The two Nanotool upgrades could be:
1. Shield Booster:
This fires one projectile with the speed of a (??) Solaris projectile, consuming a lot of energy (too much for the Small) and having a long reload time. This could have the power to fully regenerate a cruiser shield. The balance has to be worked out.
2. Core Booster:
Same as the Shield booster, but for the core. Only one difference, it only can work when the shield is down.

I'd love to have more variety in this, yeah. Also cruisers being capable of mounting healing guns instead of damaging ones <3

i like the idea. we don't need to make the repair ship more appealing, just make the repair feature more applicable.
although i must note that it depends on you how much fun you will have with your vessel. i myself have flown a repair ship for quite some time and did some most fun RP with that. sure, you won't get any direct pews, or at least not likely survive any, but this ain't what this ship is about.

+1 Agreed. The Repair Tool has so much RP potential, but yet no one wants to drive a Repair Ship casually because of how dangerous it is to actually fly out there.
That's why I think a buff/implementation of the types above will save the Rep. Ship. Allowing transports or freighters to mount those guns will kill a vanilla ship, and that is not wanted, since this is the only type of it. That's why I disagree with this idea.
