So a few people I've talked to/seen on the forums seem to think Gallia taking Cortez was a bad move instead of pushing into Gaul California. So let's think about this strategically
First the sides of the war:
Liberty/Bretonia/ColonialsCrayterians on one side(I know there are more but those are pretty much the bulk) on the other, we have Gallia, Kusari is a non threat, Rheinland cannot really do much except for now there pretty much at war with the gmg and lastly the outcasts ate trying to support Bretonia while I'm 90% sure the corsairs are friendly or at least on speaking terms. So , gallia knows about Cortez, they know Colonials Crayterians are striking from three and Bretonia and Liberty trade through there by cutting the trade routes between them they can very well choke liberty's economy and bretonias as well, once that connection is split it will weaken them both this will also give them an option to scout California more.
Now let's assume they launched into Gaul California. They might have taken Liberty by surprise and maybe taken California Minor. But once that was realized the Colonials Crayterians would move into Cortez full force. The Xenos would probably have aided with Liberty Navy against the Gallics and caused severe losses especially if Bretonia pushed into Magellan.
Maybe I am wrong but from my experience playing RTS games stopping the connection between allies is far better then rushing into a siege. I am curious to see what other people think.
Typed on phone so sadly no formatting except the dashed words
Years ago I was of the opinion that GRN should take out Bretonia first before moving onto the independent systems and then Liberty, but cutting off supply lines is a valid strategy as well, if it's followed by the annexation of one Kingdom by the other.
Staging a full assault against Liberty would be futile and counter-productive, but putting some pressure on them in the form of skirmishes into California is still somewhat acceptable while GRN deals with Bretonia, and I guess the California ZoI extensions also appeals to those favoring gameplay and fun more than sensible roleplay progression. Call it a compromise if you wish.
What I still don't get though is how the RNS Carcassonne reached its current location without any apparent obstacles.
In all seriousness, Gallia is very much the Powerhouse of faction calculus. They're a big blue blob that, with the failure of "Suppressive Fire!" eating most of Liberty's immediate assets, could move in and take the turf with little to no problems.
I can see, with the recent actions with Gallia, a turn around on the Bretonian front could be possible if done right, since Gallia is spreading its' forces more thin than I personally would go, but it'd probably require the use of Unconventional Warfare such as PSYWAR, Espionage and even guerrilla warfare in some cases.
Gauls and military strategy in the same sentence? They haven't actually been given a real battle so far, as Bretonia used "scorched earth" strategy. They are just afraid to enter a real battle, so they are trying to starve us out.
Well then, It's about time the allied forces push back. I mean, they've (Gallia) dropped a proverbial deuce on Bretonia's Front Lawn, sodomized Kusari's dog while on its' leash, Kicked the council's cat, punched the Crayterians while on their way to work, and poisoned the LIbertonians Helium supply, burned their synth paste and delivered a plague unto the houses of Sirius.
I'd say it's high time that Gallia get a swift (although not debilitating to the point of undoing everything they've done) kick in the nuts.
Is it really worth discussing an ingame strategy that always somehow will be not very logical because it had to be trimmed in oder not to kill off Bretonia gameplaywise?
I think the much more productive appraoch is to deal with the situation and enjoy the real novelty: ZoI of GRN into California. And this matters. Bc "GRN in CALI!" is a working rallying cry that makes people log ships that are just 1 system away. It comes close enough to "home system raids" to trigger a reaction.
Whether the path to California is really logical... I mean... tbh... who cares. Thank God it has finally happened.
While I disagree with Jack saying that Bretonia being subjugated by Gallia would in any way prevent people from playing Bretonia, since it'd literally only require a few rephacks and a formal surrender of Bretonia to pull off, I do think the change regarding Cortez and California is a welcome one. Anything that makes Gallia more menacing than standing around for years in Leeds is an improvement.
