Don't get me wrong here, but it seems that there are less and less games being made for PC's and then ported to the consoles.
These days it seems to be going the other way, with 'computer games' being designed to run on consoles and then being ported to PC's or as seems to be the more often these days, not even being released for PC's.
Granted, there will *always* be people out there that primarily use their computers for games, apart from
e-mail and whatever else, but we, the computer using people, will end up with only 'homegrown' games or old games that are highly moddable and therefore have a more or less unlimited lifespan, as long as people stay interested in them, like Freelancer.
What I see happening eventually is gaming consoles becoming a part of your computer. The computer industry is going to be more and more about networking. There have already been steps taken in that direction, such as gaming consoles supporting online play
EDIT: Additionally, game development technology has been improved. It's a lot easier to port the same exact game to another platform then it was 10 years ago, and keep the game quality consistent
your compt will run your tv; broadcasting will die out, and we'll just download the programmes/films we want. advertising will evaporate and will be replaced by product placement
your telephone will run via wifi, and basically be a skype phone. when your out and about, it'll just connect to other wifi nets, and have backup radio telephony as a reserve.
your fridge will have two doors: one on the back and one on the front.
the guy from the store will turn up with your groceries, and scan them in. as you remove them, they auto-scan out. your compt will suggest menus according to your preferences (veggie/spicy/fish/wuteva) and you'll just need to confirm. it'll then tell your store to deliver.
but, back to the point. Consoles were a cheap solution to an ever-present problem: when they release a game, half the market cannot buy it as they dont meet minimum/recommended requirements. so they produced a standardised machine to level the playing field.
with quad-core processing, we have processing power to burn. your console and your pc will merge into the same box, and relay the game to whichever tv you want in your house - bedroom, lounge, den, etc
Don't be absurd. Although consoles have their unique qualities, PC gaming does and will always offer something the consoles never can.
The PC is the ultimate combination of most modern technical appliances and gadgets, and it will never really die out.
As for PC gaming, I believe production of games might decrease a bit, but it'll never fall beyond reasonable levels.
Plus, no offense to anyone, but 90% of console games are utter gob****e when it comes to depth.

Similar already exists, here in Canada, a few cell phone providers started offering a service so instead of having a standard phone and a cell phone, you have only a cell phone. At home it connects on your wi-fi and you got unlimited calls like if it was a normal phone and when out from home you are using the cellphone network and having a minute per month thing like on a usual cellphone.

THAT is the reason why consoles are really popular, they are cheaper.
Its like at least a good 1000$ for a correct gaming computer.
PS3 can now be bought for what? 300$?
@ swift. Still, I totally agree, if I take game A on PC and game A on PS3/XBox 360, the game on PC will always have a longer life than the console one. The thing is simple, modding. Even if the game is not made to be modable. People will find a way to mod it, adding to the life of the said game.
Also, current consoles, while having really good online playing, still aren't in most cases near to PC online.
Oh and, just one more note, I've bought my current computer almost two years ago, for, when it's calculated over, a 1000$, and all PC games still work on a 1680x1050 resolution and high or maximum detail.
Things are much more favorable regarding computer longevity than they were before. It stays "modern" way longer.

Morrowind
Fable
Jade Empire
Farcry
these games i play a lot on my xbox - dunno whether they came out first on pc or console, but they have depth. Granted, Farcry's depth is due to its complete and utter viciousness in anything but noobsville mode, but morrowind and fable games have depth, and multiple end scenarios
You can't play quality strategy games on any console. Nothing beats the PC there. The consoles are easier to use, it's basically just plug and play. A lot of fun games, but as Swift said, only the PC can provide the depth needed for some games.

PC Gaming will never die.
PC opens up alot more variety and possibilities. It will always be their for Gamers.
Piracy? That is the big issue but their is always DRM. Not the strict junk but more welcome. Think Steam or GFWL or some other system (Yes GWFL works. Need a free account to register to save games and go online)
Only bad thing is cost wise (New or decent parts and all) where consoles can handle every game at highest quality for fairly cheap.
Easier where consoles are tray and play.
360 and PS3 though have Install options to install to HDD to make games run smoother.
Maybe down the road sometime we can play games on PC without installing (Or atleast an option to choose between). Halo 2 Vista had something called Tray and Play. Play while it installs. Not a bad idea.
