Just a fact of life. The more players there are the higher the likelihood of lag spikes and such, so I advise avoiding big fights.
On an unrelated note, since you have pointed out you're from New Zealand, expect to be called Australian.

As another, *actual* Kiwi, I manage lag problems by avoiding fights in general, and sticking to caps/transports/anything that can turret steer if i have to fight.
I also expect to die a lot

I'm No more Australian than you are!
Did you guys know? NZ is the 8th State of Australia
I'm never going to complain about my 180 ms round-trip from the southwest corner of Canada again.
Sadly I don't know what we could do to fix ANZlag other than either moving the server somewhere closer that doesn't also introduce a tonne of latency and lag for the rest of the community or require breaking the speed of light. And while the former is not quite as impossible as the latter, it'd still be an endeavour and a half.
Comedy option: We could move the server to my kitchen. It's 5000 km closer to ANZ than the current server is!
Actually, a server based in Canada sounds awesome. Still, with the bulk of the community being in Europe, I could see how such a move would be outrageous to some... I'm personally in favor of compromise, though.
I'd be okay with putting a decently competent server together and running it here. I already have a server closet in my apartment with a second internet connection dedicated to it. It's not the most powerful -- 60 Mbps down / 10 Mbps up -- but that's generally more than Freelancer needs and at some point in the near future that ISP has said they'd be laying fibre around here which would enable me to have a 250/250 connection.
Of course this is an incredibly daft suggestion and the 75% of the community that's in Europe would probably consider burning my home down for it but it's just a silly thought.

280 is probably the best you are going to get. Who is your service provider?
I'm with Slingshot and get a constant 287 on VDSL.
Im down in dirty Dunners with a shitty student flat, but seeing as Dunedin is the only place in NZ with gigabit net I'm taking full advantage of it. I'm with Orcon, who have done a pretty sweet job so far, although we did go through a rough spot earlier this year.
My ping stays within the 280 - 284 range mostly, although I have gotten some hard packet-loss recently. Probably switching to Spark next year as I'm moving.
