Okay, so we know there's a mechanics in game that actually drains power of an target ship if you shoot at him. TIzonas do that and other shield busters do so too.
What I'm thinking here is Mines, Torpedoes and Missiles that don't do much harm, but they drain the hell out of the ship's power.
It would bring a new designs into the game and balance the fact that 4 skilled bombers can pretty much cause plenty of havoc. This is not a hate thread, its just a suggestion of new range of weapons that could be there in game. This way, pirates could even pirate the capital ships or even other fighters if they keep him powered down.
Power is a great thing in this game, and alot of ship designs revolve around it. Honestly, I think they would bring a change into the game that some want and a new shift of power in ship classes.
Maybe some of designers could help me here, Jinx, others that know about numbers? How much should a weapon like this drain? What could be the refire rate? Could a mine actually produce an effect of a big radius emp drain? Does power go down even when shield stays up?
My zoner dessie doesnt even use high-power weapons (All i've got is order mk2 cruiser turrets) and I still run out of power pretty quickly if I use constant fire. The ability to keep someone's power sucked dry seems like it'd be far too easy to abuse, and I dont know about you but I dont like feeling absolutely helpless in combat.
The only Way I'd agree to this is if it were based on a torpedo, since they're easily dodged and avoided by anythign smaller than a battleship. Problem is, for any explosive to have that effect, it has to reach the center of the ship - doesnt it? I know for anti-shield mines you have to have the explosion hit the shield hardpoint on the ship, which means a huge explosion radius. You'd have the same problem there as you would with train cruise disruptors - aggroing all your allied npc's because you just drained their power and pissed them off.
It's a nice idea but I think I'm gonna go against this one.
We do need that repair-beam gun from that other mod though, for the repair ships =P
we have a repair ship and it can hold S-loads of nanobots and bats and trade them easily to the damaged players.
I'm kinda surprised that people didn't respond to this, since i think it would bring a new dimension to wars. Especially disrupting the bombers and gunboats in their attacks.
Maybe leaving the same power drainage that tizona has but lowering the actual fire power consumption.
Debs, del Cids, and Paralyzer missiles all do this. I'm not sure how much it would do to a bomber, but it certainly drains energy relative to its shield damage.
EDIT: So, yeah, I read through your post way too quickly. Paralyzer (and any other shieldbusting missile, I think) missiles already exist.. as for mines, sure. Only problem I see with this is it being used against capships as an alternative shieldbusting weapon... as for torps, probably not. I'd like to think of torpedoes as -just- hullbusting weapons.
From a scifi standpoint EMP doesn't work in space anyway.
The pulse needs something like gas to travel through. Something that allows a transfer of electrons.
A mine would be awesome, though. Give it a huge explosion radius so it'd be utterly unadvisable to use near stations and clusters of your allies. Suicide-bomb type deal.
' Wrote:No i think not. This to me just seem's another way people will nerf cap's. As we all know they will probly not be used against fighter's/bomber's.
Again, just futz around the numbers and explosion radius. A big radius and comparitively only moderately damaging reactor drain would impact nearby fighters and bombers more than the cap.

There, you slipped away. EMP is, as its name implies, an electro-magnetic wave, like light, so it doesnt require a medium to propague.
Which is why space nuclear tests were forbidden, as one of them done by US broke havok among US and Soviet sattelites.. And why a quite "famous" pre-total war scenario is detonating a medium-yield nuclear warhead at high altitude. Bye bye to 90% of a continent electronics, if done high enough.
I like the idea in theory but would it not end up like a super shieldbuster like a mega inferno or something similar although if you could drain the energy without effecting the shield like that it would make for interesting fleet tactics.
I think its possible to make guns that drain ONLY energy.
No hull or shielddamage.
I try it ;)
Cheers,
Kollon
EDIT:
No it's not:(
it's possible that those guns do no hulldamage
but they kill the shield AND the energy.
But i like the idea of shieldeating mines or torps:D
