You may not remember me. My name is Hunter Wolff. I recently had the distinction of escorting your liner during peace negotiations between you, the Lane Hackers and the Gaian Guard, with the Hackers negotiating on behalf of Battle Group Harmony. Since those discussions, I have seen no internal notification to all Union forces regarding the status of negotiations, and I have not been privileged to any communications regarding their status.

If I am going to continue to serve the Union to the best of my ability, I need to know what is going on. I have done my best to investigate on my own, to identify the causes and contributors to this conflict, but nobody seems to be able to give me a straight answer. This is why I am coming directly to you, Herr Frei. I do not believe anybody but you can answer my two most pressing questions regarding this conflict:

1. What is the status of our attempts at securing peace with Battle Group Harmony, via the Lane Hackers?

2. Beyond the Union's decision not to deliver the Hel cruiser ordered and paid for by Harmony, of which I am already aware, what are the casus belli for this conflict from both sides - not only the Union's, but Battle Group Harmony's, as we understand it?

I realize it may be unorthodox to share this type of information with a junior pilot, Arbeitsdirektor. However, when I joined the pilot corps back on Munich, there was no information about this conflict, and what we were doing here. My parents are from Leipheim, and they are third generation ship builders. I would still be there if I had half of their talent, but instead I serve the Union as a pilot. My family has always stood for the Union's core tenets - the value of Union technology and our ability to improve it, and our desire for equality for the working class of Rheinland. In order to fight this fight, I need to know how this conflict relates to those tenets, and our end goal of continuing this fight.

"Of course I remember you, Arbeiter Wolff. You kept the long watch to protect our people. Your debriefs show exemplar promise. Vorarbeiter Riehl reports that you’re the highest performing rookie pilot in the Pacifica air group.

I’ll summarise briefly. I was appointed as Arbeitsdirektor by will of the one hundred and twenty five Hammer Unions to attain security for our people in Bering.

The causes for the conflict are manifold, but can be simply distilled. The cruiser is but a public cassius beli distributed by the Separatists. The true cause of the war exists in the tensions between the Separatists and the Unioners since the inexplicable change of relations between the Unioners and the Hellfire Legion introduced by the ascension of Lord Commander Locklear to the podium within the Commonwealth of House Liberty’s armed services. He entertains a revisionist view of history, that considers us a threat to Legion interests. He has convincingly promoted the idea to the Separatists that the Legion is more useful to the Separatists than we are, and that one must be sacrificed for the other.


This is combined by the actions of Former Pacifica direktor Schilder, a dark mind within the Union’s history. Schilder is a traitor to our people who valued personal glory and the prospect of the conquest of the Marshall fleetyards over the protection of Pacifica’s people. He is largely responsible for implementing the sanctions which lead the Separatists to believe, erroneously, that a betrayal by the Union was not only worthy of speculation, but should be pre-empted.


The Lane Hackers have since swooped in to position themselves in the role of cosmic paternalists, deftly manipulating all hands concerned. We believe their interests to be those of the Rheinland government due to evidence of attempted contact between themselves and the intelligence agencies of the Rheinland Federal Republic, and have thus abandoned that avenue to peace as a potentially greater threat to Unioner lives than the war itself.


We’re in the process of attempting back-channel communications with the separatists. Outside of Lane Hacker supervision. Both the Seperatists and the Unioners have a vested interest in seeing the conflict resolved, and Schilder brought to the table.

The alternative is nuclear fire. It would win us the war, but at the cost of our souls. We would be the victors of only ash. "
