This one's a no brainer. Missions aren't worth doing, and that's not RP.
Mining needs to be more viable. Possibly, increase the concentration of rocks in the fields, proximity to processing facilities, the % chance rocks will yield, and just the price of certain ores in general universally - that doesn't affect trade, but benefits mining.
I've seen missions go up as far as 700k, that's pretty good. If you consider that bounties against players start at 500k-2M, I'd say they're pretty nifty. Fighting against NPCs, even though it's though, is a no brainer. Even the toughest missions can be done from a fairly equipped fighter if you have enough patience to avoid fire while you take away the targets.
Problem is, there aren't really good missions (paying well) depending on the role you're playing. High profile missions are found on the Border Worlds. I'm under the impression that most missions in the Core Worlds won't even go as far as 200k.
Swisscorch, the point behind the bit on mining is that it fills an RP role, but is often neglected because the pay is so much less than trading. And the missions going up to 700k are only off Malta, Crete, and Rostock (as far as I know). The ones in the Houses are 1. Too easy (VHF vs Starflier) and 2. Too cheap, good for nothing but rep fixing.
Missions are good for people in the Edge World Areas, namely the Omicron systems, since the NPC's are powerful, the contract completion fee is very high at times. I've had to take down one fighter for a cool 900k once in Delta. I loved my Supernova when I got that shot off.
However, if your not in the Omicron systems, like most lawfuls, funding can become a major issue unless you rely on a trader character in reserve. I suggest boosting prices at Capitals, Border Station and Prison stations. Capitals have all them nasty loan sharks and angry politicians. Border Station patrols can be overstretched, and need any and all help. Prison stations want their prisoners back, so quell any hopeful captives on board given hope from a fellow escapee/police killer on the outside.
Mining, if we are going to boost the prices there, then the commodities on ALL station, bases and planets will need a revamp, like real economy, one commodity change will affect another. While miners/sellers will love the new prices, buyers and some companies may not like them.
RP wise for example Planetform Inc will hate the higher prices of silver for their cloud seeding projects.
But in the end, I'd like to see a boost in mineable commodities.
The point I'm trying to make is that non-border world characters should be able to make money off of missions, and mining should have RP and practical use.
Thing with mining is, you'd *think* it'd be more economically viable.
My suggestions are actually:
- Decrease the size of certain mineable ores to <1, so a player can carry more.
- Denser mineable rock formations, so players can fill their holds quicker
- Universal increase of price in certain mineable ores, so trade isn't affected too much

Not sure the first one could be implemented, really. It's a guess, but I'm positive the game doesn't allow fractions of commodities.
I'm also skeptical about the second one. The "density" of the field (actually the amount of lose rocks generated) could be something configurable these rocks appear to be created while the player is in inside that zone. The only question is if this rate of creation of the rocks is something that was left to be modified by the game creators. One thing that occurs to me is that I don't really remember the asteroid fields being either more or less dense in terms of lose rocks. They all kinda "look" the same to me. Some feel denser because of the underlaying scenery (fog, larger rocks and the sort).

This could work.
One thing to bear in mind, Asymptotic, is that this has been discussed several times already from the time I came to Disco (not long ago). I'm pretty certain it was discussed many times before as well. I'd suggest you look back at these threads and try to find the reasoning why it was never changed before.
Yeah, I'm already aware of this thread which kinda fell apart after a few pages. (mining)
I searched for missions and found nothing...
I'm not sure about the fraction size for the ores, but VIPs take up more than 1 space, and you can have fractional ammo sizes, so it might be possible. If not that, then I really think mining should be made viable along with missions regardless of how many times it has been discussed before (in the missions argument, this is a first, actually.)
There should be more sources of income besides trade.
