Just for entertainment purposes, let's discuss where everyone gets their ship/ character names from, and whether or not there's any special meaning behind them.
I'll start with my past and present characters:
Tenacity
This was one of the first ship names I used on disco, many years ago, and became my primary moniker over the years, but to be honest it's the least interesting ship name I have. The original Tenacity was an old firefly class transport, and I based the name on Serenity. Of course, I've always been pretty stubborn and bullheaded and persistent, so the name fit in more ways than one. The ship itself has changed numerous times but has always been a junker vessel with the same name.
Bastet & Pakhet
These were the names of my order caps back in the day, so I obviously went with the Egyptian deity theme. The original pakhet was my first order ship, a zoner destroyer, and eventually gave way to the bastet- a geb carrier- before becoming a zoner destroyer again as the pakhet (mk2).
Bastet, pakhet, and sekhmet, in Egyptian mythology, are technically all the same feline goddess, with different centers of worship. Bastet was worshipped in upper (southern) Egypt and was depicted as a more docile domesticated cat. Pakhet was worshipped in middle Egypt and was depicted as a desert wildcat like a serval or caracal. Sekhmet was worshipped in lower Egypt (the nile delta) and was depicted as a lioness.
All three were said to be the wife/ concubine of Ra, also called the eye of ra, and represented fierceness, fertility, and protection.
Maihos / Leontopolis
With my return to disco very recently, this has become my new order character in light of the bastet/pakhet no longer being around or serviceable.
Maihos, also called maahes, mihos, miysis, or other variations, was the son of bastet/pakhet, and was a warrior God depicted as a lion. He was the only Male feline deity worshipped in Egypt. His name meant "he who is true beside her" and he was considered a protector, and as the son of ra he fought the serpent Apep during ra's nightly voyage. Fighting serpents, to me, sounds just like fighting nomads, quite fitting.
Maahes' center of worship was a city the Greeks called "leontopolis" - or the city of lions. This city in Egypt has temples to both bastet/pakhet and maahes, and live / domesticated lions roamed the temples freely.
Which brings me to...
Taremu (K'Hara|Taremu)
My nomad character. Taremu was actually the Egyptian name for the same city the Greeks called leontopolis - but the Egyptian name Taremu means "land of fish", since in addition to being a center of worship for maahes/bastet, Taremu was also a major fishing port for Egypt. Of course, land of fish also fits a nomad pretty well, I think.
Mekal
Used as a last name for my core character and temporarily as a ship name, mekal was an alias for Maahes/Maihos which meant "fierce devourer". The first hieroglyph in Maahes' name means both lion as well as truth or order, so Maahes became known as the devourer of the wicked and/ or guilty. He was also sometimes called the lord of slaughter or the scarlet lord.
