now that could make for some very interesting game play. *druels at the thought of the massive fleet Vs fleet battles. im curious though, how would freelance pilots fit into this plan?
Quote:how would freelance pilots fit into this plan?
That is a problem, Colm :0/
I can think of a couple of options but none that are really implementable in the near future without a lot of work on the coding side of things. There are a few out there that want to fly Battleships regardless of how little sense it makes in a roleplay scenario. Of course, there's nothing in the mod restricting them from doing just that, so imposing player-made rules to govern capships on the server is just going to cause grief.
It's all down to player choice. If RP is to succeed here, I would suggest all factions to adopt some sort of system like Caribe has proposed, though maybe one that only takes into account currently active players. I will explain (numbers purely illustrative):
2 players online - restricted to fighters 4 players online - allowed one gunboat and any combination of fighters 6 players online - allowed one cruiser, two gunboats and any combo of fighters
Etcetera.
That way as long as you can group together the same number of players as a rival faction, you'll be on even terms in battle, and it also partly rids us of the lone Battleships situation.
As for Freelancers, I don't think there's a way around it, people are going to use whatever they can get their hands on. At least this way faction operated Battleships will always be feared since they would require their huge armada to be present as well >:0)
But badger what would happen if a faction made a strategic decision to move their BS that would mean that most of its members would have to be active and also what would happen if there was only 2 ore 3 ppl on and they were restricted to fighters, if Igiss gives the BS the power and armour it should havein the next version this would mean that a freelancer who would be allowed to have a BS could come on and easily take out the faction pilots. The only solution to this problem would be to not allow freelancers to have a BS which would never be done. While I too would love the idea of fleet battles there is too many problems and complications for example the SF is one of the servers oldest clans but due to their small numbers they wouldnt even get a cruiser and factions like the Bs| and AW who are divisions of much larger clans could have their clans just sign up and that would m,ean that they would be flying around with 5 or 6 BS meaning that they have almost unrivaled power and if they allied (not going to happen Dab and Wolf have issues with each other) then no one could possibly stand against them. So as great as the idea would be i doubt that it would be workable.

Alpha I agree but I am not going to quote all that. :D
If that happened the AW (although probaly the biggest faction already) would probaly be untouchable even if all others tryed to take it on together and no one faction should be that powerful or they would end up running the server. (Dab even you must agree it would be kina or silly if the AW could take on everyone put together :P )

I've been mildly miffed by one-shot weapons since their implementation, oh so long ago. I remember the days when fights were a matter of who could aim better, rather than who could aim a single shot. - Virus
Thank you kiggles and your right no one clan should be unbeat able on the server and btw if this happened i get the felling u wouldnt be flying the SF's gunboat flagship. *points at Jamez* :P

Wanna try that one for a fit Kiggles? I have some bloodthirsty pilots eager to shoot something else than NPCs :P
****** joking!
I said already, it's not doable, don't get me wrong, I like the idea of fleet battles... but... how to do that and not drive away new players?

How is that any different to how it is now? AW is totally overloaded already in comparison to everybody else so if they wanted to they could pretty much control the server by numbers. This way they will at least be doing it with a nicely balanced mixed fleet rather than all in capships.
Once Battleships get their upgrade, hopefully they will still be a little vulnerable to 3 or 4 fighters and 3 or 4 players shouldn't be a problem for any faction to get online, in order to tackle a rogue freelancer BS. I shall repeat that the numbers I put forward are purely speculative, so any amount of balancing could be done to find a good blend of ship types online. As for AW getting enough people online to swamp the server with Battleships? They're a big clan there's no doubting that, but Caribe's initial proposal would limit even them to 2 or 3 Battleships at most.

As I posted above, for the sake of RP on this server, this proposal should be done by player choice. Factions could easily stick to these guidelines and still keep dominance over freelancers, while new players can do whatever they like without fear of persecution. While it may seem tempting to go out and get a BS for yourself as a solo player, it would be a whole lot more powerful if you had an entire faction fleet behind you.

It's simply a guideline for the ship classes faction members use online. If your faction members can't stick to those guidelines, what hope have they of sticking to your own faction rules? What hope have they of roleplaying at all? You all agree this is a good idea, so why approach it so negatively?

I really like the idea ( I think I said that) but for the simple fact that players can't be trusted which has been proven once too many times. Apart from [ThE], I know a number of people that are just looking for loopholes in the rules and possible exploits, let's name a few:
- Battlestar immunity to torps vs other BS vulnerability to them
- Half dozen+ Tizona turrets on Huegenots + Huegenot hitbox problem
- Until recently, almost everyone had a BS Shield on anything it could be fitted on
- Remember the Ravenclaw's dual thrusters?
and there is much more to the list.
But if it would be doable somehow, OK I'm in. It needs a little rethinking however.
