Mind you, back in 85 the total amount of people who actually RPed on this site were less than the current server pop is despite there being a queue to get on. For those of you who remember, the sudden influx in server pop came due to the shutting down of a few prominent EU based vanila servers and, later, Igiss's mod featuring on a widely known russian gaming magazine. The population made the servers and systems feel much more alive and active, but it introduced horrible lag to where we had to reduce capital ship secondary refire rate, and a huge amount of daily sanctions.

PSA: If you have been having stutter/FPS lag on Disco where it does not run as smoothly as other games, please look at the fix here: https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...pid2306502

Was still better.
Probably because you also weren't a admin at that time.(HUR DUR LET'S ADD SCIDATA)
Encounters were still nicer.
More players.
A lot of the good old memories are clouded with the larger population.
The mod itself isn't in a terrible state... But the bugs and weirdness of 485 were kind of part of it's charm. For me, a major turn off from 85 to 86 was no longer being able to mount really weak weapons anymore, like class 5/6/7 on VHFs to conserve energy for my terrible aim.... And the NPC nerf. You can still do it in the current mod but the NPC weapons are so weak that you may as well just have nothing mounted.
I could see that new players would work towards getting a ship, get owned by people who play the game more frequently. Then stop logging in. The game itself without player interaction is somewhat boring. I don't think you can inject too much life into it this late into it's cycle
I think it still might be salvageable, but there needs to be more done on the PvE front. Right now Discovery is really only interesting when interacting with other players. With a reduced population those interactions become harder to have (especially in some Timezones), which is just going to lead to a negative feedback loop.

I completely agree with this.
We need stuff that is interesting even when there are no other players online. At the same time it needs to be something that will tie the players to an area.
As much as I love trading/exploring systems, these activities do not necessarily promote player encounters, because one is about getting from A to B as fast as possible and the other is about remote areas.
I recently came back from hiatus and discovered feature that is new to me, the battlezones. I have not explored them much yet, but so far I like them a lot. I'm not sure if the zones have any scaling based on player count, ship type, etc.
How about introducing more of these zones with different difficulties/ship types? Make some where are fighters only for example. To balance it decrease spawn rate if a cap ship enters the area?
This will drive players to predictable locations increasing the chance for interaction, while providing something to do until others arrive.
Is it possible to make system or server wide announcements about a battle zone being engaged by player? Maybe not for all of them to allow people a chance to play pure PvE if they want to.
Another thing is NPC traders, buff them a bit, to make NPC piracy viable. More frequent and better loot. There is not much point in sitting at the trade lane when there is so few player traders and the amount of NPCs is not much better. And when something finally comes 15 minutes later it is a convoy with oxygen.
PvE zones are not worth it since Haste's nerf. Step one is rolling out @Skorak s fix from cortez to all so they aren't useless for native factions.
Step two is remove Haste's nerf on big ships farming one system/zone at a time with an announcement monthly or something to boost those areas.
Imo it should be okay to allow 200 mill/hr if it's one system at a time telegraphed to all.
And check out tau 23, there is very cool piracy zone courtesy of @Markam - they have spawning transports with nice cargo, cool concept, still low profit tho And people tend to not use transports for piracy besides well...me and 1-2 others tops
